All Hallows Bronx, NY 11/18/03 Joe Walsh: 'The Gaels are under the new leadership of new Head Coach, Ed Gonzalez who is all too familiar with the team, serving as Assistant Coach under John Carey for the past seven years. Although more experienced than last year, we are still small, and a new found depth may provide the Gaels with a strong presence. In our favor is the senior leadership of highly recruited, senior guard, Ronald Ramon and also Albert Forbes. Seniors Willie Carty and Brandon Nieves must hold their position and play well for us to compete. Junior Guards, Codi Oliver and Terrell Elliston are second year varsity players and are very talented which will give us some of the experience needed in the guard position. Although not yet challenged on the varsity level, juniors Terrell Hill, Shane DeNully, Daryl Washington, Mike Davis, Claudio Thwaites, Jonathan Ruiz and sophomore Darryl Crawford provide the Gaels with a crop of very talented young players. However, they must contribute in order for us to compete. Our schedule is always challenging but if we stay focused, play together as a team and embrace that challenge with a hard work ethic, we may surprise a few people. Junior Varsity Head Coach Joe Walsh. Key Players: 5'9" Chris DeLaRosa, 5'8" Mark Lake, 5'5" Nick Walsh, 6'8" James Carr, 6'2" Glenn Phillips, 6'1" Andre Shaw and 6'3" Michael Hernandez. Freshmen Head Coach Andre Regan Ass't Coach Aaron Dicenzo. Key Players: 6'2" David Williamson, 6'1" Tywan Clarke, 5'10" Kevin Williams, 5'3" Darryl Smith, 6'2" B.J. Warrington.' 7/30/03 John P Miciotta: 'A group that had some good moments as sophs and juniors last year, returns a year older and wiser and still scary for CHSAA rivals despite a lack of size. Three seniors will lead the way for John Carey's Gaels this season and the headliner in that group is 6' guard Ronald Ramon, who brings with him a lot of talent and winning experience. Not only was he an important support player on the team that went to the city finals two years ago, but he played point guard this summer for the Gauchos and helped them to perhaps the best summer of any AAU program in the country. His play with the 'chos served as notice for college recruiters that even though he's a scorer for the Gaels, he has the poise and mental toughness to play the point in college. While he is the Gaels' perimeter stalwart fellow senior Albert Forbes works inside. The 6'5" forward looked in noticeably better shape this summer and it improved his quickness to the ball and rebounding. 6'3" Willie Carty is the third senior in the group and he has shown flashes of good shooting and defensive ability. All Hallows will need him to be more consistent and lend a hand on the boards. Like their senior teammates, the juniors for the Gaels feature terrific perimeter quickness and ability to shoot and drive to the basket. 5'11" Terrell Elliston and 5'10" Codi Oliver established themselves as important players on the varsity last year and should continue to improve. Elliston is a terrific all-purpose guard who has retained the scoring touch he showed early in his career for Mt. Carmel while improving as a playmaker. Oliver is heady and showed an improved shooting stroke during the summer. Both are good perimeter defenders. Depth on the perimeter comes from two more juniors, smooth shooting 6' Brandon Nieves and heady 5'11" Shane Denully, as well as 6'1" soph Daryl Crawford, who is good enough to push for time in this deep and talented group. Where the Gaels look for help up front is considerably less certain and they figure to play a lot with 4 perimeter guys on the court with Forbes. Three more juniors who may help inside are 6'5" Mike Davis, a kid with raw ability who could not get established on the varsity last season 6'1" Jonothan Ruiz who needs to get tougher, and 6'5" Daryl Washington who played well at times this summer. If one or all of them emerge to help add depth and size, an already fine team will be that much better. That's a thought that makes the traditional powers in the league more than a little nervous. The future also looks very bright for the Gaels as point guard Chris DeLaRosa headlines a talented freshamn class. Kevin Williams, Nick Walsh and 6'3" Bijon Warrington also have ability to become good players a year or two from now.' 7/19/03 John P Miciotta -- High School Summer Challenge, 2003 @ St. Raymond HS: 'All Hallows Like Holy Cross they battled a lack of size in their first two games. They got a noticeably trimmer and quicker Albert Forbes back for their last game against St. Benedict's and he helped them keep it close and play their best game against their toughest opponent. Terrell Elliston continued his transformation from undersized scoring guard to point guard with scoring skills and is getting better and better. Fellow junior guards Shane Denully, Brandon Nieves and Codi Oliver also played well. Up front the Gaels also got nice minutes from 6'5" junior Daryl Washington, whose size may become a key factor as the regular season progresses.' 10/12/03 NYHoops: Keith Mason's Team Rankings - 9. All Hallows- Will be led by 60 PG Ronald Ramon, in the summer he was a distributor for the Gauchos, but last season with All Hallows he was their leading scorer. Look for him to score even more this year, probably around the 20 point clip, but he isnt the only player on the team. They will start 3 guards with 510 PG Codi Oliver and 511 PG Terrell Eliston, and Ramon. Oliver and Eliston are tough players who will give their all whenever they are on the court. Up front theyll depend a lot on 65 PF Albert Forbes who has a big body, and should be able to get some points and should be a big force on the boards.' 10/28/03 NY Post: All Hallows' coach John Carey headed to Fairfield.
Automotive, Brooklyn, NY Coach Will Stasiuk: 'Last season, Automotive (16-9, 11-5 Brooklyn II) made its first trip to the 'A' league playoffs in school history in its 2nd season of 'A' league play. Key losses include: seniors Doug Townsend (SUNY-Morrisville) 19.8 ppg / 11.4 rpg & Myles Nelson (attending Kingsboro- Spring 04') 25.4 ppg as well as promising sophomore & projected starter Tola Lawal (transfered). Despite the fact that junior 5'6" captain Eddie Hood is the only returning starter, this year's team should be a stronger group than last season's. The team starts 4 juniors and 1 freshman. Scoring will not be a problem as Automotive has a group of guards who can score in bunches. Hood & 2nd year junior guards 5'8" Willie Gooding and 6'0" Tramone Clark should all average double figures this season. These three are joined in the starting lineup by 6'4" freshman center Chavar Jones who has a bright future ahead him. The 5th starter is the undeniable key to Automotive's season. 6'6" 2nd year forward Jovon Moses is a relatively unknown PSAL star. Moses blossomed during the off-season and has hit for 18 points and 21 rebounds in 2 of our first three games and has been a huge defensive force on the floor. Without a doubt PSAL observers and college coaches alike will know who he is by season's end. There is also a good deal of depth on this squad: 6'2" Terry Brooks is a 6th man who can score and defend and 3 veteran senior guards can all shoot the 3, Chris Figaro, Merrick Bailey & captain Raul Chavarria. The team's strengths are its speed and athleticism, but its Achilles heel is undoubtably its size. Besides playing regular season games in the Brooklyn II-A division , we are playing in 4 tournaments: The Corning Cup at Albany HS with a first round matchup with a strong Kingston squad 11/28 & 11/29 , the Gobbler Snowflake Classic with a first round matchup against Susan McKinney 12/7 & 12/13 or 14, the Paul Kuzco Holiday Tournament in Stamford, Connecticut 12/23 & 12/26 (tournament includes Stamford the # 2 seed in the CIAC playoffs last year) & the New York-Philly Classic on 1/24. Non-league games remaining include a trip to Forest Hills (the 2002-03 Queens I Division champs) on 12/5. If this young team reaches its potential a playoff spot and shot at the division title is certainly within our reach.'
Bishop Loughlin, Brooklyn, NY The Lions play in the CHSAA Division AA (toughest) West with home and away games against Rice, Xaverian, All Hallows and Christ the King. They play the East teams - St Rays, Molloy, McClancy, St Francis Prep and Holly Cross - once each for a 13 game league season. Last year they were a disappointing 3-10 in the league, 13-15 overall and lost to St Raymond 77-61 in the quarterfinals. Their three year coach Ted Gustus and long time Loughlin assistant, Kenny Pretlow are both gone as new coach Khalid Green takes over the team. Loughlin begins the season on December 9th hosting St Rays. 11/30/03 Rudy King: 'Coach Khalid Green in his first year at the helm, will feature a very quick, balanced and fundamentally sound basketball squad that can run, set-up, drop it inside and hit from the perimeter. Disciplined best describes this group. The roster -- Herbie Allen (Jr.), Desean Gist (Sr.), Todd Sowell (Sr.), Adekun Olanrewaju (Sr.), Shaun Bowman (Sr.), Tyrie Corbell (Jr.), Shamir Williams (So.), Khalil McDonald (Jr.), De'Sean Pearsey (Sr.), Danny Fouche (Sr.), Derrick Charles (Jr.), Robert Shaw (Sr.) Head Coach: Khalid Green, Assistants: Gregg Vance, Rudy King and John Antley.' 12/12/03 Reportedly, 6-5 Ontario Canada junior forward, Nathan Skinner, is now enrolled at Loughlin. 'Skinner, who participated at the ABCD camp in Teaneck, New Jersey last July, averaged 32 points, 12 rebounds, six assists and almost four blocks a game while playing in Ontario.'
Blair Academy, NJ Coach Joe Mantegna lost his starters and key reserves in Luol Deng, Charlie Villanueva, Patrick Davidson, Mike Beers, J.P. Giese, Amir Smith. and Roberto Felipe from last season's team which finished 25-4 losing to St Benedicts in the Prep School championship game. The key returnee from that team is 6-8 senior Chris Alvarez, who will be joined by 5-11 senior Alex Adrien, 6-5 Shamari Spears, 6-1 junior point guard Eric Price, 6-4 Will Scott (committed to Cornell) and 5-10 freshman point guard, Malcolm Pope. Blair begins this season at the War on the Shore prep school tournament in Milford De. November 21 to 23. Other schools there will be Fork Union, Hargrave, Lauringburg, Life Center, OSNA and Winchendon. On January 31, they will play in the Lehigh Valley Hoop Festival, matched against Maryland's Bishop McNamara. Then theyll be in the Prime Time Shootout at South Brunswick High going against Paterson Catholic. Their league, the Mid-Atlantic Prep (MAPL), includes Lawrenceville Prep, Hun, Peddie, Hill (PA) & Mercersburg (PA). As a team they figure to be in the hunt once again for the NJ prep school championship. 11/22/03 NJ Hoops: Blair began the 2003-04 season without All Americans Luol Deng and Charlie Villanueva, and the result was the same as most of the Buccaneers games as Blair topped Notre Dame Academy 80 - 66 tonight at the War at the Shore in Milford DE. 11/12/03 InsidersHoops: Prep School Countdown: No. 11 Blair Academy. Joe Mantegna's Squad Will Have New Look. 10/03 Metro Hoops Preseason All State team (Prep Schools) Second Team 'Chris Alvarez 6'8 Blair Academy - Senior. Originally from Miami (FL), Chris Alvarez is in his second season at Blair Academy in New Jersey. Last season, Alvarez battled in the shadows of two of the best seniors in the country, Luol Deng (Duke) and Charlie Villanueva (contemplated NBA, but is at Connecticut). Chris headed to the University of Dayton. Eric Price 6-1 PG Blair Academy - Junior. The jet-quick 6-1, 180 pound point/combo guard from Blair Academy is blessed with excellent end to end speed, Price is a guard who excels in fast paced situations. He likes to push tempo and he can penetrate and get to the basket quite regularly. Eric transferred from Dunbar H.S. in Wash., D.C. The 6-1 point guard pulled out of his early commitment to the Memphis Tigers last month and is now back on the plate for many high major schools. Wants to go to Duke!' 10/31/03 Hoops USA High School Boys fifth year prep is 3. Blair Academy (Blairstown, NJ). 7/24/03 RutgersInsider: 'Shamari Spears, a 6'5" 230 pound small forward from Salisbury High School, North Carolina, is headed to Blair Academy. Spears averaged 27.3 points last year and entered the 1000 point club in his second varsity season. Spears will be repeating his sophmore year. With a high game of 55 points and another inside performance of 43 points and 24 rebounds, Shamari will be asked to take his game to the perimeter this year and develop more outside skills. His ultimate position may be at the swing. He is considered a major national recruit for Blair Coach, Joe Mantegna.' 2/23/03 NJO: Blair put forth a marvelous team effort against St Benedict, leading for most of the contest before falling, 55-53, at the Hun School in Princeton.
10/28/03 Coach Ken Kelly: 'Last season Elvis was my only returning starter and our team finished 9-7, behind both Roosevelt and Gompers in the Bronx East. We did not qualify for the PSAL playoffs. This year we are returning seven from last year's team plus All Hallows transfer, 6-0 senior guard Paris Jones who will probably start in a three guard set with Elvis and Keniel. Our 6-5 senior lefty Kevin Woodside and improving 6-8 senior center Jesse Iyalekhue will start inside and be spelled by 6-7 junior Tim Zephyr and 6-7 soph Tysheim Topping. Our key perimeter reserves are 6-0 senior Justin Avery and 6-1 junior shooter Jeff Povataj. We begin our season on November 19th with a home game against county rival, JFK and then play at Long Island Lutheran on December 14. We are in the Riverbank State Park tourney on 12/20 & 12/21 with Rice, All Hallows and Bishop Loughlin. On 1/17/04 we are in a tournament at St Dominic's on the Island. With our experience, talent, depth and size I expect we will do well in the Bronx East during the regular season; we should then make the playoffs and do well in them.'
Don Bosco Prep, NJ -- Coach Kevin Diverio's graduated Karl Anderson, Trevoy Chambers, John Lopez, Mike Wasilenko, Danny Falcon and James Courter. That team finished with an impressive 20 - 6 record losing to Begen Catholic 66 - 53 in the North A quarterfinals as BC's Sean Banks dropped 29 on them. The Ironmen will be led this season by their impressive frontcourt - senior John Oates, junior Tyrell Biggs (6-7 NJH #1) and senior swing shooter Chris Rose. Other teams figure to press them all season. If their young guards can get the ball to their strong frontcourt players on offense and hold their own on defense, the Ironmen will prosper this season. 10/29/03 Coach Kevin Diverio: 'Don Bosco Prep Profile Seniors - John Oates (6'10") Forward - Good outside touch for a big guy has improved and refined his low post game and I would anticipate him being a force in the paint this season John is an excellent rebounder (especially on the defensive end) and I expect he can be a double digit rebounder had a good summer at ABCD, Five - Star (Pitt) and Vegas (Ravens). Chris Rose (6'5") Guard - great shooter! Has come in to his own with the graduation of 8 seniors last year fundamentally sound does everything - shooter, good rebounder, great court vision, solid defensive player has the ability to play multiple positions (point guard to forward) Chris has 1400 SAT's and is looking to continue his basketball career in the Ivy League or Patriot League. Juniors - Tyrell Biggs (6'8") Forward - Tyrell is a gifted offensive player with an uncanny ability to score around the basket he has tremendous hands and footwork has worked hard to improve his range has worked harder to improve his body and overall athletic shape - he has dropped 20 pounds which has made him quicker at both end of the floor Teams will have to double him to stop him which should allow him to display another strong aspect of his game - passing. He was ranked the #1 underclassman at Nike Camp this summer and many consider him the #1 junior in New Jersey. Stephen Natoli (5'9") Point Guard - Solid floor leader and strong defensive player Steve is good at distributing the ball to open players but can knockdown an open jumper if left alone he possesses all the intangibles to make him a very good point guard. Carl Augustine (6'2") Guard - lanky wing player Carl is a good scorer he has improved his range and has become pretty consistent from the 3 point line he has also improved defensively and will be counted on to contribute heavily at one of the guard spots. Sophomore - James Bryant (5'10") - Combo Guard - has the court vision, ball handling and quickness to play the point but he also has the range and ability to score off the dribble to play the off guard he will be a big key to our success this year played well all summer and made the all star game in the developmental league at Five-Star (Honesdale - August). Other Possible Contributors - Lazaro Pineda - Junior (transfer from Emerson, Union City), Ryan Smyth - Junior, Peter Conte - Junior, John Rzeznik - Junior, Peter Brown - Sophomore and Connor Cornine - Sophomore. Team Outlook: We look to be young, but very competitive with Oates, Rose and Biggs being the only players with any real varsity experience. If our back court plays like I think they are capable of playing, we can be a very good team this year. League: Northern New Jersey Interscholastic League (NNJIL). Tournament: Red Cross Rotary Classic in Charleston, SC (Dec 26 - Dec 30), Independent Games: St. Joe's (Metuchen) @ Seton Hall University on December 21st, St. Mary's (Manhasset) @ St. John's University on January 31st.' 6/03 And 1 tourney -- Don Bosco Prep: The Ironmen made a statement in this tournament. They won their first round match vs. Nazareth 71 - 46, against Emerson 53 - 47 and they almost doubled St Patrick 61 - 31 to make it out of their bracket and into the Sunday quarterfinals vs. Seton Hall Prep. They led the Prep at halftime, stayed close for most of the second half before losing it late 58 - 48. Their frontcourt is impressive with 6-10 junior John Oates (NJ Hoops # 9), 6-7 sophomore Tyrell Biggs (NJ Hoops # 1) and 6-5 junior Chris Rose (NJ Hoops honable mention last fall, but I'm confident Jay Gomes will be rating him higher this fall). The point guard this weekend was the much improved 5-11 sophomore Stephen Natoli flanked by 6-2 sophomore Carl Augustin and first off the bench freshman 5-10 guard James Bryant. They will sink or swim with their guard play and the ability of the frontcourt to move up and down the court. 7/19/03 John P Miciotta -- High School Summer Challenge, 2003 @ St. Raymond HS: Don Bosco They were without their inside bookends John Oates and Tyrell Biggs so they struggled to find an inside presence. 6'5" shooter Chris Rose was wonderful and soph Connor Cornine was had good moments also.' 3/8/03 NorthJersey.com: Sean Banks scores 29 as BC beats Bosco. 10/31/03 Hoops USA High School Boys Concensus Top team includes 72. Don Bosco Prep - Ramsey, NJ.
Frederick Douglass Academy, NYC 11/11/03 Mario Beras: 'Frederick Douglass Academy team is going to be very young with no seniors. The team has one returning player from last year's 20-10 team which lost a heartbreaker to current state federation champions Lincoln. Key players are : 6'2 G Ivan Rodriguez, 6'4 G/F Corey Lyons, 5'8 PG Kevin Linares, 6'3 G/F William Willis, 5'9 PG Damani Corbin,6'3 G/F Steven McKoy - all juniors. The key to the Lions success is their tough defense and the development of the younger players in the program - 6'0 Donovan Bratton, 5'9 Daquan McCall, 6-4 Ike Echebiri, 5'10 Shelton Ladson, 5'11Amadou Konteye - freshmen . The Lions will be very dangerous in the playoffs if can survive their tough schedule which includes CK, Molloy, Cardozo, St. Mary's.' FDA finished the regular season last year 10 -2 in the PSAL Manhattan 1A division and seeded ninth going into the playoffs. They won their first round game 55 - 45 vs Erasmus and the second round 66 - 49 over rival Manhattan Center before falling in the quarterfinals 47 - 37 to Lincoln. Hillside, NJ 6/03 And 1 tourney -- Hillside plays in the North 2, Group 2 (second smallest) section and were seeded sixth in last season's playoffs but made it to their sectional finals before losing to Roselle with the now graduated Jessie Holley. Hillside's star next season figures to be their 6-7 senior center Hensley Charles (NJ Hoops # 31). The other starters at And 1 were the two seniors 6-1 Aaron Desir and 6-5 Hassan Forman with the juniors 6-5 Antwan Brinson and 6-6 Chris Byrd. Jamil Coleman is their 6-3 senior sixth man. At And 1 they won their first round game against Hudson Catholic 58 - 48, lost to St Benedict in the second round (no disgrace there), then beat McCorriston and Bishop Dougherty on Sunday. 6/17/03 NJ Hoops: Caracter leads Scotch Plains in the championship of the Kean University Team Camp over Hillside. 6 foot 1 Sr. Aaron Desir paced Hillside with 15 points. John F. Kennedy NJ. - 12/18/03 NorthJersey: Kennedy ready to run. Coach Jim Ring: 'With "official" practice just 2 days away, here is how we stack up for this year. We had a very productive summer, finishing 2nd in both the Jersey City and Linden summer leagues. We were 4-1 in both the And 1 classic and the Metro-Classic. We went undefeated in a team camp at LaSalle University. Playing a total of 65 games allowed us to regroup from last year's growing "pains" season. We return 11 lettermen from last year's team. We lost 2 senior non starters. Our point guard however moved out of our district so who needed to replace that position and in H.S. that is easier said then done. None the less we should be very competitive in our league (NNJIL) and a force in our county (Passaic). We are led by seniors Tommy Trent and Antoine King. Bashir Grimes our other senior has an eligibility hearing with the NJSIAA on Wed. 12/3. If he is ruled eligible we will be very very good like our (1999 team and almost as good as our 2000 team with all state guards Mike Cleaves and James Lattimore). Trent and King are bookend 6'2" wings who are athletic and very quick, they are getting D-2 and D-3 looks. Our juniors are 6'6" Richard Haywood and 6'2" Rashon Seabrooks. Haywood will be one of the better big men in the league and county. He is quick and lean (175lbs). Seabrooks is athletic and a hard worker, they complement eachother well. We have 2 soph. sleepers in 5' 6" point guard Jarred Blake (he's a real waterbug on the court) and 6' 3" wing Rashod Bishop. Bishop has the ability to be a great player for us. Time will tell. The rest of the bench is filled with hard working, great work ethic players who make practice fun and challenging. Without Grimes we will still be able to be a force again in the league and the county. We just might be able to reverse last year's record. With him I feel we will be real special. I'll let you know how we make out on 12/3.' 12/8/03 Coach Jim Ring, JFK Paterson: 'You can update our profile. Bashir Grimes has been ruled eligible to play this year by the NJSIAA.'
Lawrenceville Prep, NJ The school is located in southwestern NJ between Allentown and Philadelphia! Their league, the Mid-Atlantic Prep (MAPL) includes Blair, Hun, Peddie, Hill (PA) & Mercersburg (PA). Traditionally the league is loaded with each school having at least one or two D1 prospects. Two years ago Lawrenceville was rated as the second best prep school in New Jersey, behind only St Benedict and last season they ended their season losing the league championship game to Blair. They figure to be challenging for the laegue and state prep title again this season with top 50 senior 6-10 Joakim Noah (committed to Florida), 6-7 forward Andrew Morrison, 6-3 David Whitehurst (rated last year by NJ Hoops as # 6 in the senior class), Texas transfer point guard Kashif Sweet and 6-3 junior Craig Moore. On February 22 they will be playing Moorestown at the NJ Scholastic PBP Classic at Cherry Hill East High School. 11/10/03 Insiders Hoops: Prep School Countdown: No.15 Lawrenceville Joakim Noah Anchors Ron Kane's Club. 10/31/03 Hoops USA High School Boys Concensus Top Prep schools did not include Lawrenceville. 2/17/03 NJO: Charlie Villanueva finished with 25 points to lead three players scoring in double figures as Blair beat Lawrenceville, 73-55, to win its third straight Mid-Atlantic Prep League tournament championship in Pottstown, Pa. 10/03 Metro Hoops Preseason All State team (Prep Schools) First Team 'Joakim Noah - 6'10 C PF Lawrenceville Prep - Post Grad Son of tennis star Yannick Noah. Noah, a versatile 6-foot-10, 205-pound forward from Lawrenceville High School in New Jersey, had a red-hot summer that propelled him into most top 100 lists. Joakim plays with a purpose and goes hard. Like his long term potential, especially when grows into his 6'10 frame. Noah played at Poly Prep in Brooklyn last season. He's headed to University of Florida next year. David Whitehurst - 6'3 SG Lawrenceville Prep - Senior. David is one of the best all-around athlete in the Maple prep league. Streaky shooter with unlimited range, when he's on. One of the best defensive players in the state. David is a relentless defender who can defend positions 1-3. As a junior David led the Big Red to a 18-9 record. Currently, he's still undecided about college. Leaning heavily toward the Ivy League. Kashif Sweet 6'0 PG Lawrenceville Prep - Post Grad. Kashif cat quick point guard from Austin Texas, can really distribute the ball. Strong and can get to the hole with ease, especially in the open court. And can he defend, can't wait to see him go head-to-head with Eric Price-Blair or Mingus Murray - Hun. Should play a major role in Lawrenceville's quest to challenge St. Benedict for the crown. Second team - Craig Moore, 6'4 G Lawrenceville Prep. The 6'4 combo guard played a major role in Lawrenceville's success last year. Craig is a savvy player with great understanding of the way the game should be played. The competitive guard, has a consistent jump shot, and can take over a game when he has to. Last year Craig played primarily played point guard last year, however with the addition point guard Kashif Sweet from Texas, he will also see ample time at the 2-guard spot. Craig was named third team All-Prep as a sophomore.'
Lincoln, Brooklyn, NY. Coach Dwayne (Tiny) Morton graduated Dominic Osei 6'5", Stew Graddick 6'1", Jamal Dart, 6'3" Ricky Smith 6'1" and Wil Mayes 6'4" but his state champion team returns his superstar senior point guard, 6-1 Sebastian Telfair and junior star 6-7 Antonio Pena as well as 6-3 junior athlete Nyan Boateng. He's also added transfer senior guard Eugene Lawrence but not (as rumored) 6-5 banger Marvin Roberts. The Railsplitters finished last season 31-4 beating McQuaid in the semifinal and Christ the King 75-63 in overtime for the state championship. Before the state games they took their second PSAL championship beating Banneker 75-69 at the Garden. With all that talent and Bassie running the show all those goals are once again attainable. 11/9/03 Coach Dwayne (Tiny) Morton: 'This is our up to date roster. Outlook: Any team with senior point guard Sebastian Telfair is an automatic contender, but add 6-7 junior power forward/center Antonio Pena to the mix and you get a team capable of knocking off anyone. Telfair is a flashy, pass-first point guard who may make the jump straight to the pros, but first he'll try to help the Railsplitters to another Class A State Federation crown. He averaged 28 points and 8.6 assists last season. Linden, NJ. 6/03 And 1 -- Linden: The Tigers beat Sportswood in the first round, took Mendham 58 - 57 in the second before losing 68 - 64 to Niagra Falls in the third round. On Sunday they beat Holy Cross. The Mendham game was a classic. With 32 seconds left Linden led by one and had the ball. Mendham had six fouls to give. Thirty seconds later after five inbounds, Mendham finally forced the turnover but with their fullcourt pass was intercepted to end the game. The Tiger starters are the juniors Quin Johnson and Ariel Garcia with sophomores Michael Henderson, Hafeez Brown and CJ McGhee. They don't have a legitimate center so Coach Phil Colecchio's team has to win with their quickness and athletic ability. 10/13/03 Terence Johnson: 'To quote Bad Boy's latest creation Da Band.. "All I hear is Bad Boy this and Bad Boy that". I got to state this, "All I hear is Linden this and Linden that". For the past 2 seasons, I've been hearing that Linden is going to finally fall off. Coach C is going to have to rebuild the Tigers. I myself was surprised by Linden's team last season, but not this year. Linden will not be a surprise to anyone because everyone knows that they are here for the long haul. You may say, but they lost the final piece to their glory day with Tony Wilson taking his game D-1, but I will refuse to listen. Linden is here, and will be here as long as Coach C and his staff stay together. The 2003-2004 Tigers will be driven by the play of their guards. Ariel Garcia, Quinn Johnson, Mike Henderson and Lawrence "The Glove" McGee are the hart and soul of the team. Quinn has one of the sweetest strokes from the outside this conference has seen in 8 years and Ariel is the warrior that every coach wants to go to war with. LJ may only be a soph. but is battle tested through from AAU battles and Linden's JV team that won the title. Mike Henderson may be the ace in the hole for this year's Tigers. Mike can defend down low, stroke the outside jumper, bring the ball up during pressure situations and has the springs to bang one on you. Linden's front court will go to battle with the 6'6 Hafeez Brown and top 50 soph. Charles Miller. Linden has some tough games this year, (St.Anthony, Neptune) and most likely don't go undefeated in their division play like last year. Road games vs Cranford, Plainfield, Elizabeth and Scotch Plains will be tough but look for Linden to make the playoffs again and do well this season. Longwood, LI 10/8/03 Coach: Dennis T. Terry: 'The Lions' record last season was 15-7 as we lost to Whitman in the Suffolk County Championship game 49-46. Our key players who graduated from that team are Akin Rawlins, Izzy Flowers & Alex Bardeguez but we will go at least six deep this season. The probale starters are Clarence Alonzo 60 guard 16.3 ppg 5.8 assists 3.2 steals All Suffolk County last year & All County Tournament Team 2002-03. He is a very quick guard that can get to the hoop and finish or dish it off. Plays the point but will also be used off the ball at times. Stephen LS Polk 63 forward/guard 7.7 ppg 4.9 rebounds 1 block per game All-County Tournament Team 2002-03. He is very tough on the boards at both ends but has really improved his outside game from ball handling to shooting. LS is very athletic and runs the floor very well. Jordell Mortley 510 guard that can play either guard position. He is exceptionally quick with a good handle and passing skills. 5.5 ppg. Horace Johnson 64 forward with ball handling skills in the ½ or full court. Although he only averaged 3.1 points last season, hes expected to do more scoring this year along with increasing his assists. Mike Kelly 510 guard who can shoot the ball a little. He is starting to do the other things to make himself a complete player and tougher. He made the All-County Academic Team last year. The first sub will be Marlon Rawlins 60 guard. Marlon is a streak shooter who will help us in spots. Our division rivals are Brentwood & Sachem. Games against them and Bayshore will be key ones for us. We're playing in the North Broward Prep Classic Coconut Grove, Florida Dec 19-23. We'll play up tempo games. We have a lot of seniors with experience and they are expected to carry us all year. We dont have a lot of size but our athletic ability will compensate somewhat. A couple of seniors have been on varsity for 4 years and another 3 and they know this is it for them so Im sure theyll be hungry.'
Monroe Campus, Bronx 1/14/04 Newsday: Monroe Rules Bronx A West. Coach Nigel Thompson's young Eagles were seeded 7th in last season's class 'B' playoffs getting a bye to the sweet sixteen where they took Chelsea 63-53. They nipped Health Professionals 47-43 in the quarterfinals and then upset third ranked Jane Adams 71-57 in the semis. Then 6-4 freshman Michael Glover got a last second tip-in for the 70-68 shocker against defending 'B' champ, Wings. Both Wings and Monroe have moved up to the A division this season, Wings to the Bronx East where Columbus looks best and Monroe to Bronx West, where coach Johnnie Mathis' JFK Knights usually rule. But coach Thompson started four sophs and freshman Glover last season, so they there's plenty of room for growth this season and next. 11/24/03 Coach Willie Negron: 'Last year's record in the league was 14-4 overall 18-4 and finished as City B champs. Overall Summary: McClancy High School has not had an overal successful year in quite a long time, however that is about to change. The entire program is ready for this promising season. The varsity potentially starts 5 seasoned seniors, with 2 starters (Hamilton-Lopez and Borgolte) possibly vying for Division 1 scholarships. The bench has height (Wood and Lo), speed (Mitchell and Robinson), and some good shooters (DeJesus, Pimentel and McDevitt). The overall emotion of this team will carry us to some league wins this season and upset some teams. The junior varsity has talent and decent height. The backcourt of Evans Pyrrhon and Brian Reyes is one of the top in the league and the addition of Pedro Rodriguez should give McClancy some beef inside. The freshmen squad is solid. Max Calixte is a big, strong, raw body and Isaiah Blue gets to the basketball and finishes with the best freshmen around the city, Although we compete in the best league in the country, McClancy will upset some teams this year and pave the way for a successful future. Mount Saint Michael, Bronx. Coach Tom Fraher: 'The 2003-2004 basketball roster for Mount Saint Michael will feature a plethora of young players for the upcoming season. Three sophomores, six juniors and three seniors round out this year's squad as it plays in the highly competitive CHSAA. The team offers lots of depth at all five positions as it faces a rigorous 24 game schedule. The Mountaineers will be led by seniors Greg Jones and Curtis Coombs. Both players come off solid junior campaigns where they were major contributors to last year's team. Jones, a 5'8'' guard, is a quick, tenacious defender who can score from the perimeter. Coombs, 6'3'' is a consistent rebounder and slasher from the small forward position. They both possess the experience that is needed since they will be teamed with more inexperienced players. The two sophomores who figure to be part of the starting five are point guard, Nefta I, and forward, Alejo Rodriguez. I, who stands at 5'7", is a genuine leader. He sees the floor very well and can score from the outside. Rodriguez, 6'6", has a knack for getting his hands on everything. He's very active around the basket on both the offensive and defensive ends, and can step out and shoot the 15 footer. These talented rookies will be relied on heavily. The center position will be filled with a 6'8" junior, Jason Walsh. Only playing his third year of organized ball, Jason continues to improve in all facets of his game. He is a legitamate shot blocker on the defensive end and continues to hone his low post skills on the offensive end. He's made tremendous strides since last year's J.V. season. Juniors Mike Rustin, Jason Hurt, Kyle Traylor, and Kareem Maylor will all see valuable playing time as reserves and potential starters. St. John's Prep and Cardinal Hayes seem to be the most talented teams, however, there's a line of others who figure to make a run at this year's title. Hopefully, Mount St. Michael can continue to improve as the season progresses and make some noise come playoff time!

This team has been playing together during the summer, and their familiarization with each other should be a strength, as was demonstrated when this team made it to the finals of the IS-8 Jumpman Classic, the first high school team to do so, ever! "J-Mitch", who was recently named by The Sporting News as one of the top 25 Freshman/Sophomore players in the country, will continue to get better with his all-round game, and Dexter Gray, as always, will provide the leadership, and grunt work, by example. Keith Benjamin has elevated his game, and will shoulder much of the leadership responsibility for this team. Michael Coburn, rated the 24th best freshman in the country by HoopScoop, continues to impress with his work ethic, and certainly will be a major contributor towards this team's success. Chris Bradley and Shanty Robinson give strength and depth for Coach Bob Cimmino in the post, while Johnathan Smith should continue to be a threat from the perimeter. But the question remains who will start at PG? Coach Cimmino has three PG's that bring unique qualities to the table. Michael Watson brings an intense ability to defend along with his speed and energy. Chris Lowe, since his days at St. Ursula CYO, has been developed to run offenses, with his streaky scoring ability. And Torian Kendall brings flat out speed on the court. The Knights will embark on a national schedule this season, certain to face nationally-ranked opponents. It starts with the Iolani Holiday Prep Classic in Iolani, Hawaii. In that tournament 5 preseason top 20 nationally ranked teams from the mainland will be participating. After the Iolani Tournament, the Knights don't have much time to rest, as they head to the Slam Dunk at the Beach Tournament in Delaware, where the group of teams participating is said to be the among the best ever in the history of the tournment! The Knights will open against Chester (PA) HS. After some tough interconference play, they head to the McDonalds Classic in Erie, PA, which includes Darius Washington's Edgewater (FL) HS and Kyle Lowry's Cardinal Dougherty (PA) HS. After some more tough inter-conference play, what could be one of the best games this season in this area matches up the Knights against St. Raymonds, to be held at St. John's Univ. on January 31. And then on to the PrimeTime Shootout in New Jersey against Greg Paulus' (Duke) Christian Brothers Academy (NY), By any estimation, this schedule is a challenge for any team in the country. One the Knights will embark on with Head Coach Bob Cimmino at the helm. When all is said and done, the experience gained from this schedule should put the Knights on course for a 5th consecutive trip to Glen Falls. Website is www.mountvernonbasketball.com.'

Poly Prep Brooklyn, NY Coach Bill McNally: 'Poly Prep is pursuing their seventh Ivy Prep League championship in a row this season with a very experienced team. The Blue Devils only lose one starter and return all other players who saw considerable minutes last year. That player, however, is Joakim Noah, our 6'10" center. Noah repeated his sophomore year at Poly and finished his New York State eligabilty last season and therefore had to move on to prep school. He was the statistical leader at ABCD last summer and is now at Lawrenceville Academy. Joakim recently committed to the University of Florida. Poly, however has a very talented young player ready to step into Noah's role. 6'8" sophomore Jabari Edwards is vastly improved and is already getting noticed by high major programs. The Blue Devils strength will certainly be in their backcourt; with returning point guard Charlie Parker and sharp shooter Liam Biesty. Both were first team all league selections last season. Another key factor will be athletic and skilled forward Peter Ajayi, at 6'4" he was able to break into the starting line-up as a sophomore last season and has also seen his game grow immensely since then. Look for senior Mike Lappin, juniors Sal DeMarco and Dan Manning and sophomore Kevin Kelleher to also make strong contributions this upcoming season. Poly will once again be a favorite in the Ivy Prep League along with Horace Mann. A highlight will be Poly's always difficult non-conference schedule. This aspect makes the program different than most New York City Private Schools. Poly opens their season on November 22 in the Bob Kronish Memorial Classic at South Shore High School vs. perenial P.S.A.L. power Grady. In their next game Poly will host St.Marys, one of the strongest Catholic schools in the state. The Blue Devils will participate in the Monsignor King Christmas Tournament, host Long Island Lutheran and take two trips: first to Baltimore, Maryland and a second to Bangor, PA. The Blue Devils are a strong contender for the New York State Class B State championship.'

Sean will be out with a torn ACL until February. The rest of the team will not be decided until Thursday but is looking very promising. Both the juniors and seniors have won the "C" City title on Junior Varsity. We will be a little shorter this year as compared to last year but we will make up for it with attitude, speed, and heart. We finished last year with a 16- 9 record. We were upset in the semifinals by Scanlan. Cathedral Prep wound up winning the "C" last year. This year we are going to Trumball, Connecticut for the Northeast Christmas Tournament at St. Joseph's High School. We open up against Notre Dame High School from Utica on Friday, Dec. 26th at 6:15. Other teams in the 8 team event include Mnsgr Scanlan, St Joes, SI and host Trumbell. I think it is going to be very competive this year between us, Scanlan, Cathedral and Salesian.'
Rice, NYC. -- Coach Mo Hicks graduated Shagari Alleyne, Carl Gervias and Steve Dyer from last season's Rice Raiders team which finished with an unRaider-like quarterfinal loss to Marlon Smith's Molloy Stanners 72 - 68. The season's record was 19-8, good enough to rank them # 6 in the region by MSG and nationally # 64 by Eddie Oliver's rankings. They're in the tougher CHSAA division AA grouping, the west, with All Hallows, Christ the King, Loughlin and Xaverian, so they'll play each of those teams twice and visit St Rays on January 16th. The team that beat St Patrick had only six players - Denzil Barnes, Taskico Brown, George Williamson, Ted Mack, Edgar Sosa and Joseph Vines. But there were three important positives for them this weekend. Their 5-8 sophomore point guard Densel Barnes played very well and may now have a step up on the position for the fall. Meanwhile the Russell Robinson legend continues to grow. Against Roman Catholic on Saturday (he would later lead the 'chos at the Rumble) R squared hit six treys and dropped 26 points. Finally 6-7 junior Arturo Dubois and 6-8 freshman Curtis Kelly got to play against serious competition. As a combo they are still a work in progress, but potentially they can be very good. 3/8/03 Daily News: Stanners shock Rice in quarters.

If we come together we can challenge for the division title in the super strong Brooklyn 3A Division. We are hosting two Classics, the first is the Bob Kronisch Memorial Classic to be held on Friday Nov. 21st 2003 at Tilden H.S. It features three games -4:30 PM Boys and Girls Vs St. Edmund, 6pm Tilden Vs FDR and 7:30 pm South Shore Vs New Utrecht. Admission is $5 at the door. Part of the proceeds will be donated to the Bob Kronisch Scholarship fund at FDR High School which honors the former great player, coach and referee who passed away suddenly last year. Our other Classic is the Tenth Annual Jerry Gold Memorial which honors former Tilden Coach Jerry Gold. This event will be held on Sat. Dec 13th also at Tilden. The matchups are 11:30 am Tilden Girls Vs South Shore Girls, 1pm South Shore Vs Bergtraum, 2:30 PM Tilden Vs Fredrick Douglas Accad.and 4:PM Canarsie Vs New Utrecht. Admission is $5 at the door. The best move I made at Tilden was getting two great new asst. coaches who will bring a ton of knowledge, effort and enthusiasm to our young team. They are former Wingate star and former pro player "Big" John Harris and former college asst. coach Jody King. These two great coaches will help last years two assistants Michael George and Mike McKie work with our JV and varsity teams. Our top players are 6 foot, 185 pound lefty senior power guard Brendon Luckain who has an 81 gpa and works hard every day, 6'4' senior Delphinaud Jean Pierre who is a tremendous athlete who can really score from the wing and has a 78 gpa, 6'1'' Clinton Hayden , a very talented junior who is very strong going to the hoop and can play all five positions for us, senior point guard Jimelle Girod, a 5''7'' cat quick ballhandler who can get in the lane well and needs to become our leader on the court in the future. Our center will be'6'9'' Phil Jones who will be eligible on Dec. 11th 2003 if he continues his hard work in class. Another top player for us will be junior Gary Harris who plays super "D"and has great scoring ability. The 6''7'' freshman Alonzo George is a player to watch for us. If I am not wrong he can become a major force in NYC in the future as he is very bright on and off the court. Coaches Mckie and Harris will help him reach his potentiel. Perhaps our key player will be true point guard sophomore James Mills James is related to my "adopted son Duane "Shake" Martin and comes to us from Arizona . We are looking forward to his blending in with our guys quickly. Others who will help us will be 6'4'' junior Antonio Alphonso, 6'2'' junior Jimmy Noel, 6'3'' senior Esan Brown and 6'3'' senior Marvin Rea. Junior guard Ryan Sandy can score but must get stronger to play any meaningful miniutesfor us this year.'
Scotch Plains, NJ 10/14/03 Terence Johnson: ' ews flash, the Raiders are coming, the Raiders are coming, hide the women and children! The Scotch Plains Raiders are no longer to be known as just a girls basketball team (Lady Raiders are a top 5 Program in NJ). They now have the pride and joy of Fanwood back at home. When things didn't work out for the #1 sophomore in the nation 6'9 Derrick Caracter at St.Patrick HS in Elizabeth, all of the hoop junkies and internet people penciled DC in at Oak Hill, Seton Hall Prep, IMG in Florida, St.Anthony and St.Raymond. None of them even mentioned Scotch Plains-Fanwood HS in NJ. Well guess what!. DC has returned to the high, and is not accepting nothing but a state title. But if you think for 1 moment that DC is the only player on Scotch Plains-Fanwood's HS roster this season, you will be surprised. 6'6 soph. Lance Thomas will join DC in the front court and will soon join him on everyone's top 100 for the 2006 class. Soph. Mike Johnson, a transfer from St.Anthony joins the Raiders this season as well. The floor general will be in charge of getting the ball to DC and Lance and playing hard nosed defense. Moving to the 2 guard spot will be last year's starting PG 5'10 junior Lakeem Lockery and playing the other guard position will most likely be outside shooter 5'9 Sr. Sean Fuller. Others on the team that will contribute are 6'4 Sr. Mike Walker, 6'3 Jr. Gavin Ford and 6'4 Sr. Dave Clemons. The schedule includes tough road games vs Cranford (Tip Off Classic Dec 21st 7:30pm at Seton Hall), Elizabeth, Linden, Irvington, St.Patricks, The Prime Time Shootout and The Slam Dunk to the Beach and home games vs Plainfield and Linden.' 7/25/03 Caracter gets more help -- NJ Hoops top sophomore 6 foot 9 Derrick Caracter made news last winter when he left state power and T.O.C. winner St. Patrick's to attend his local high school Scotch Plains. The public school is well on the way to becoming a state power. 6 foot 6 So. Lance Thomas was one of the top frosh in the state last season for Scotch Plains. Scotch Plains is getting another of NJ Hoops top 15 sophomores with 6 foot Michael Johnson transferring to Scotch Plains from St. Anthony's. Johnson was one of the top young players NJ Hoops saw in May in the NJ State 15 & Under AAU Tournament. Johnson helped lead Scotch Plains in the Kean University Team Camp championship. 7/27/03 Courier News 'The local team creating some buzz on this year's circuit is Scotch Plains-Fanwood, which added St. Patrick transfer Derrick Caracter, a 6-foot-9 sophomore, to a roster that already included talented 6-6 sophomore Lance Thomas and junior point guard Lakiem Lockery. The Raiders ran the table at the Kean tournament. But Scotch Plains-Fanwood coach Dan Doherty has not been able to get his stars together often because of the call of the weekend "exposure" showcases for individuals.' 6/17/03 NJ Hoops: Caracter leads Scotch Plains in the championship of the Kean University Team Camp 7/14/03 RutgersInsiders: 'Sophomore Derrick Caracter gets the ink but Scotch Plains classmate Lance Thomas is busy trying to prove that he got game. Seton Hall Prep, NJ. Coach Bob Farrell graduated four ranked seniors - 6-2 Jamar Nutter, 5-11 point guard Shayle Keating with the forwards 6-4 Alex Busbee and 6-4 Pat McCrossan. The current senior class has only 6-6 Sebastian Blazer on the roster but the junior class has highly regarded players in 6-2 Anthony Pusar, 6-8 Brandon Costner, 5-8 Chris Andrews, 6-1 Mark Solomon and 6-1 Darryl Harvey. The first four started at and 1 this summer along with 6-4 junior Brian Lytle who has since transferred. His bulk and inside talents will be sorely missed. The most intriguing player on the roster, 6-11, 240 lb freshman John Marciano who may be able to supply some needed punch inside. The Prep play in the post-Christmas Red Cross, Roundball Classic in Charleston, South Carolina from the 27th through the 30th, the Scholarship Fund Festival at St Peters College and the Battle of the Boardwalk vs St Anthony on January 17th. 10/31/03 Hoops USA High School Boys Concensus Top team include 35. At the East region of the High School Championship in June, Lytle was the third leading scorer for Seton Hall, averaging 8.3 ppg. Seton Hall advanced all the way to the finals of the 64 team region. 6/22/03 Nine months from now the New Jersey Tournament of Champions
final game will be played. With that much time to go there is no guarantee
that St Anthony and Seton Hall Prep will be the participants, but ....
The Pony Pirates are an enjoyable group. Since all their starters are entering
their junior years - 5-8 point guard Chris Andrews (quicker than
lightning), 6-7 lefty center Brandon Costner, 6-3 Andrew Pusar,
6-3 forward Brian Lytle and 6-1 guard Mark Solomon - they figure
to be much improved nine months from now. The three key reserves are
6-0 soph Porter Braswell, 6-6 senior Sebastian Blazer and 6-1
junior Darryl Harvey. In the quarterfinals Don Bosco Prep stayed with
them for most of the game before losing by ten. Against a tough Niagra Falls
team that had beaten St Rays by two, SHP led 31 - 22 at the half and again
finished strong winning 61 - 41. Andrews, Costner and Pusar are
their stars. Chris is the team's glue and leader. Just watching
Chris and Derrick Mercer go one on one for 32 minutes was worth
the admission price. Pusar is the heady wing forward. He fills the
passing lanes on defense, makes smart plays on offense and led them with
a 9 for 14, 23 point performance in the championship game. Costner is
the one most likely from both teams to be playing in the NBA in the future.
The 6-8 lefty is the team's best three point shooter, is fluid in the post
and his foul troubles in the championship game were crucial. That's
SHP's Achilles Heel. When Brian is out of the game they don't
have post protection. They need a nice game from all three of their stars,
while St Ants can rely on more depth to win key games.
11/03 SchoolSports 5. St. Anthony Last Year's Record: 21-5. Outlook: There is no high-major talent here that will intimidate the opposition, but the bottom line is that Bob Hurley's group is athletic and can lock teams up. This team goes nine deep, led by undersized junior center Barney Anderson, a long 6-5 high school version of Ben Wallace. Junior Ahmad Nivins (6-8) will be eligible in January after having to sit out nine games due to transfer rules, and he'll give Hurley some help up front. However, the guards are what make this team tick, and don't be surprised to see four on the court most of the time. Marcus Williams can play anywhere on the court, while fellow 6-2 senior Otis Campbell was the team's top scorer over the summer. Junior Derrick Mercer is a solid floor leader who is a hound defensively, while junior Sean McCurdy and seniors Lamar Alston, Ahmad Mosby and Shelton Gibbs will also figure into the deep rotation. 11/7/03 Student Sports: Preseason Boys Hoops FAB 50: '# 12. Leaders include 6-2 senior guards Otis Campbell and Marcus Williams along with Derrick Mercer (5-9) and Lamar Alston (6-2). Leading scorers were: Otis Campbell and Derrick Mercer of St. Anthony's with 19 and 18 points, respectively and Andrew Pusar of SHP with 23 points. Campbell finished with four boards, two assists and a block as well, while Mercer also put up three boards, three assists and three steals. St. Anthony's is one of the top programs in the nation with 23 state championships to their name, and a regular season record of 21-5 last season. Under head coach Bob Hurley, St. Anthony's will head to Philadelphia next weekend to compete for the right to be named true champions at the 2003 AND 1 HBC at St. Joseph's University on Sunday, June 29th at 12:00 noon. That title game will air that afternoon, June 29th, on national television, on Fox Sports Net (at various times depending on the market). With that much time to go there is no guarantee that St Anthony and Seton Hall Prep will be the participants, but .... The Friars are vintage Bobby Hurley, a mobile center playing with four guards. At 6-6 junior center Barney Anderson is their tallest player by three inches; their players can all make the Naval Academy height restrictions. At And 1 they played to eight deep - starters Anderson, lightning quick 5-10 junior point guard Derrick Mercer with the senior wings Marcus Williams, Otis Campbell and transfer Sean McCardy, reserve guards Lamar Alston, Shelton Gibbs and sophomore Ralph Fernandez. They've got two Ahmads ready for playing time - 5-11 senior point guard Ahmad Mosby is recuperatting from an injury and will challenge for point guard minutes, while 6-8 Ahmad Nivens is transferring from County Prep in Jersey City, will be eligible next week to provide a capable backup for Barney. The Friars play fullcourt man to man defense, switching on picks and doubling on post entries. They fastbreak on every chance but with four guards they can always find someone to penetrate from their set offense. They're a wonderful team to watch. 6/30/03 Inquirer: St. Anthony proves itself in national event. Jersey City's Friars beat Booker T. Washington of Memphis, 72-60, for the And 1 basketball title. St Benedict, NJ. - Danny Hurley's team graduated Art Bowers, Bashir Mason and Eric Hazard; Stanley Branch ran out of eligibility and super sophomore Javan Carter transferred in, then out. That team finished 24-3 beating Blair Academy in the N.J. Prep School state championship game 55-53 when Blair star Luol Deng was injured. This season they'r are still loaded as their key players JR Smith, John Ezeokill, Eugene Harvey, Eric Moore, Ismalia Tchuisi, Frank Traora and Alex Galindo give them great talent and depth. Their first tournament is Smith's Ragu Classic in Utah 12/11 - 12/13 with DeMatha in the field. He's also as good a shooter as there is when he's not rushed and, the more you watch, the more his athleticism grows on you. He's long has very quick hands, covers ground with long strides, and has great timing. He almost never jumps the highest when going for rebounds but the ball seems to find its way into his hands. The support players for the St. Benedict's aren't bad either. Delaware native Jawon Carter and Brooklyn native Eugene Harvey are a pair of speedy soph guards who come with great reputations and great ability but the sleeper in the back court rotation is senior Jon Ezeokoli who at 6'3" was the team's best clutch shooter in this tournament. Many of his baskets came when the Bees were not playing well and his long treys always seemed to give them a needed burst of energy. More then that. he's an aggressive defender with long arms and good enough feet to keep quick point guards in front of him and close out to shooters. He doesn't appear to have a strong body and that might keep high majors away but he's someone mid majors should work hard to get before word gets around how good he is. Also 6' Eric Moore will have to earn minutes as a junior but he's a solid prospect in his own right. Coach Hurley has some good talent to choose from up front also. Junior Mark Aziz is 6'8" and has some face-up skills while Ismaila Traore, who's also a junior is 6'8" as well and can rebound and clog the middle. Frank Tchuisi is 6'10" and has great size and tools. He can run the floor but will need to gain experience and improve his hands. Truthfully being challenged a bit here will probably help them during the season because while they likely know they have greater talent than any team they'll face, they learned here they must play hard to win and as I suspect Coach Hurley will admit, experience can be the best teacher for players who sometimes need to be reminded how to compete. 6/27/03 St Benedict: Hoop Scoop - 'We also have heard that 6'1 frosh Jawan Carter from Wilimington (Tatnall) DE, who is ranked #24 nationally by the Hoop Scoop in the Class of 2006, and 5'9 soph Eugene Harvey from Brooklyn (Boys & Girls) NY, who is the #13-ranked sophomore in New York City on Ron Naclerio's updated list that we plan to publish either late this week or early next week, both are transferring to Newark (St. Benedict's) NJ, where they will join 6'5 Jr Earl Smith, 6'7 Jr Stanley Branch, 6'6 Jr Alex Galindo, et al. to form one of the most powerful high school prep school teams in the nation.' Web notes: 'Eugene is closer to 5-11 and will repeat his sophomore year. Even with Eugene on the floor, Carter looked like the best of their three impressive guards. Stanley Branch was not on the St Benedict's And 1 roster. The latest PrepStars print edition has him at IMG, Bradenton Fl. Stanley was the NJ Hoops top rated player in the 2004 class and his post presence will be missed. But the team is still loaded with more and higher quality talent than any in the region. Their two best players, Smith and Galindo missed the tournament playing at the NBPA Top 100 Camp. Their next best, the 6-7 transfer from West Morris, Mark Aziz did not start. 6-0 junior guard Eric Moore was part of a three guard starting rotation with Carter and Harvey and will probably vie with them for playing time at a two guard rotation during the season. With Branch gone 6-10 Frank Tchuisi and 6-6 Ismaila Traore started inside and were capable. With that much talent the trick for coach Danny Hurley will be getting them to play together as a team. Even without Smith and Galindo, they looked awesome for the three games on Saturday before inexplicably self-destructing against Roman Catholic 59 - 28 (wow!?) on Sunday.' 2/23/03 NJO: Blair put forth a marvelous team effort against St Benedict, leading for most of the contest before falling, 55-53, at the Hun School in Princeton. St Dominic, LI 10/28/03 Coach Rob Pavinelli: 'St. Dominic lost four starters from last years 17-7 team. It will be a very deep and unselfish team with many contributors. They will be led by returning starter 6'2 Sr.swingman Dwayne Whitfield, an athletic slasher who is coming off a bad dislocation of his elbow which made him miss most of the summer. When healthy, he could be a major force on the Island. The depth begins in the backcourt with 4 returning guards, 5'3 defensive whiz Sr. Manny Olivo, 5'10 Sr. Max Most, a quick penetrator who can also shoot the 3, 6'1 Sr. sharpshooter Chris Murphy and highly touted 6'2 Jr. Bobby Kiernan. Jrs. Brian Sheehy, Greg Spatola, Sean Kennedy and Jim McEnroe provide more depth to an excellent backcourt. At forward, the Bayhawks are led by three much improved Srs. 6'3 Dave Kennedy, 6'1 Jim Burke and 6'0 C.J. Erickson. All three will be looked upon to provide scoring and rebounding. Up front St. Doms will look to 6'6 Sr. Dan O'Grady and 6'5 Jr.Brandon Serrano. Both have excellent inside moves and can also step out and shoot from 15 to 20 range. Serrano is coming off a serious leg injury which forced him to miss all of last year and most of 2003. Improving 6'5 Jr. Keith Fuchs will add much needed depth and size. St. Doms will play a tough nonleague schedule, including the likes of St. Anthony's (Jersey City), Christ The King, Philadelphia city powers Bartram and Chester, as well as The Kreul classic in Coral Springs, Florida.'
St. John the Baptist, LI 12/5/03 Jayson Kiang: 'The St. John the Baptist Cougars return three starters from last year's NS-CHSAA semi-finalist squad. Senior PG Kevin Spann (6'0"), senior forward Dan Masciello (6'3"), and much improved junior guard John Filosa (6'3") will lead a very young team that will have nine new varsity players, including 5 sophomores and one freshman. Many D-1 schools are recruiting Spann, regarded by many coaches as the best PG in Long Island. He is on track to eclipse the 1,000-point mark for his career this season, which will make him the third SJB player (Marvin Cheese '02 (SUNY Albany), and Ryan Johnson 03 (St. Thomas More)) to do so in the last three years. SJB will look to fill the scoring void left by Ryan Johnson's (24.7 ppg) graduation. Although young, fifth year coach JD Walsh will have at his disposal a lot more depth than he's ever had at SJB. Promoted from last year's JV squad are guards John Yancigay (5'10"), Andrew Slizewski (6'0"), and Paul Schmidt (6'0"). Sophomores vying for playing time are guards Maurice Charlton (5'10"), Roy Jiminez (5'10"), and Travis Mark (6'3"), as well as ever improving sophomore forwards Ed Zajac (6'6") and Gerald Eugene (6'6"). Freshman guard Prentice Small (5 5"), will see time at guard. Although unavailable for league play, 6'2" Jr. transfer Chris Tracy (Deer Park) and 6' 7" Jr. transfer Ryan Ahrens (Holy Trinity) will compete for starting slots. St.John the Baptist competes in the Nassau-Suffolk CHSAA, the toughest league in Long Island. The league that includes St. Mary's, St. Dominic's, Kellenberg, Chaminade, St. Anthony's, and Holy Trinity will provide formidable opposition for the Cougars night in and night out. Although certainly a rebuilding year at SJB, if the team blends and matures this year's squad has the potential to surprise a lot of teams this year.
St Johns Prep, NYC. St Johns Prep is in the Division A (second hihest CHSAA) South with St Edmund, LaSalle, Xavier, Bishop Ford and Nazareth. Their 16 game league schedule is home and away with those teams and one game against each team in the North: Cardinal Hayes, Fordham Prep, Mount St Michael, Iona Prep, Cardinal Spellman and Archbishop Stepinac. They finished last season with a 12-4 league record, 18-8 overall losing to Hayes in the semi-finals. Their second game of the season is at home against Woodmere Academy on December 9th. That will probably be their toughest opponent this year. 11/24/03 Coach Ron Dennis: 'St John Prep H.S. has 8 returning players from 2002-03 season. Key returnees: 6' 7" Bryant Dunston, 5' 10" Serge Clement, 6' 3" Gary Graham, 6' 3" Jacques Fulcher, 6' 2" Chris Williams should start and key reserves: 5' 8" Oscar Haynes, 6' 6" Nathanial Williams, 5' 6" Tyrell Cotton. Key newcomers: 6' 4" Richard Thomas, 6' 4" Jelani Winfield, 6' 3" Richard Baptiste, 5' 9" Antwan Gregg, 5' 6" Eric Rosado, and 5' 6" Andrew Russo, roundout the rest of this promising team. The Red-Storm fell 3points short of making it to the Class B C.H.S.A.A. finals losing to Cardinal Hayes H.S. 46-43. This has made this team eager to get the 2003-04 season underway, seeing how close they were to getting to the finals. It should rekindle their hunger.'
St Mary, Manhassett LI 10/23/03 Coach Tim Cluess: 'We will be a very young team with only 1 senior. We have 3 returning players. Sr. John Agar is a 6' shooting guard who averaged 14ppg. as a junior and will be getting time at the point this year. John is a shooter and gets to the basket well. He is a hard nosed defensive player. 6'5" Jr. Dan Green- Solid athlete can shoot and get to the basket. Improved post up game as well. Good passer. Dependable shot blocker and rebounder. Averaged 11ppg as a soph. 6'5" Jr. Tyson Johnson. - Outstanding athlete. Strong. Puts it on the floor well. Can shoot the 3 and create his own. Strong rebounder. The rest of the team will be made up of newcomers. 6'6" Jr.-Tyrone Hanson is a superior 3 pt. shooter who also handles very well. Has a good feel for the game. Relentless on defense he will add a lot of energy to our team. 5'9" soph. Gilbert Montalvo - Wonderful court awareness. Can pass with the best of them. Improving 3 pt. shooter. Will give us depth at the point guard position. Eves Mbala- 6'6" soph.- excellent athlete with potential. 6'1" Jr. Tom Nolan- shooter who is fundamentally sound. Extremely hard worker. 6' junior.Rudy Fuentes- another 3 pt. shooter and a hard worker. We will be a young team that should improve dramatically as the year progresses. St Raymond, NY -- Oliver Antigua graduated seniors Daon Merritt, Louie McCroskey, Tariq Atkins, Miguel Garcia and Corey Simmons but he returns a slew of talented players in seniors 6-6 Gavin Grant, 6-4 Brian Laing, 6-3 Chester Taylor, 5-11 point guard Wesley Wicks, 6-8 center Frank Elgar, wing Rich Jackson, point guard Dante Chisolm and the juniors 6-3 Ricky Torres, 6-5 Shawn Hilliard, 6-0 Charles Vasser and 6-3 Chris Bethel. His promising junior guard Rick Cadell has moved upstate. Coach Antigua thrived during his first year coaching and may do even better this season. The Ravens are in the CHSAA division AA east with home and away games against Molloy, St Francis Prep, Holy Cross and McClancy. They'll play each west division team (Rice, Xaverian, Christ the King, All Hallows and Loughlin) once. Before Christmas they play Paterson Catholic on the 21st in the Hoop Group Classic. After Christmas they're in Myrtle Beach for the Beach Ball Classic along with Bishop Dougherty and Edgewater. They play Lexington Catholic in the Hall of Fame Invitational on January 19th. On January 31st they play Mt Vernon at St Johns Universtiy, host Cordozo and St Patrick on February 8th and and 16th before visiting St Anthony on the 19th. 11/03 SchoolSports 6. St. Raymond's Last Year's Record: 26-4. Outlook: You'll be hard-pressed to find a pair of more versatile, hard-nosed forwards in the country than Gavin Grant and Brian Laing. Grant (6-7, 200) has been compared to former St. Ray's star Julius Hodge because of his versatility and athleticism, while the 6-5, 210-pound Laing has improved his perimeter game and comes off a season in which he averaged 15.5 points and eight rebounds per game. Frank Elegar, a 6-9 senior center, will give the team a legitimate inside guy, and 6-4 junior Ricky Torres is lights out from beyond the 3-point arc. This team also has plenty of depth and experience. Senior Wesley Wicks is athletic and will play the point guard spot, and 6-5 junior Chris Bethel is a warrior coming off the bench. Coach Oliver Antigua has all the pieces in place and even has a pipeline of talent coming up after both the JV and freshman teams also won the city championship last year. 11/7/03 Student Sports: Preseason Boys Hoops FAB 50: '# 10. St. Raymond's (New York, N.Y.) 26-4. Three regulars and four of the top six players return from defending state Parochial A champs. Other junior vets include touted 6-4 Ricky Torres and 6-5 Shawn Hilliard. 10/31/03 Hoops USA High School Boys Concensus Top team includes 4. St. Raymond- They lose 3 senior starters, 60 PG Corey Simmons, 63 Tariq Atkins and 64 Louie McCroskey, but they may be even better this year. This year they will have 4 seniors in the starting lineup, 67 SF Gavin Grant 65 SF Brian Laing, 68 C Frank Elegar and 510 PG Wesley Wicks, rounding out the starting 5 will be 63 SG Ricky Torres. The key to St. Rays success will be their point guard play, with Wicks, 60 Dante Chisolm and 61 Rich Jackson. If they can get solid play from these 3, they will be the favorite to repeat as city champions.' 7/19/03 John P Miciotta -- High School Summer Challenge, 2003 @ St. Raymond HS: 'St. Raymond The Ravens were the only team here that could approximate the depth and talent of St. Benedict's and the Ravens had the whole arsenal present. Gavin Grant was ok despite struggling with his shot and Brian Laing played with his typical toughness. 6'8" senior Frank Elgar showed flashes of improvement with respect to both his skill and intensity. If he can become more consistent he will garner more minutes and recruiters will take greater notice. Most important for the Ravens however is that guys who will be needed to replace departed perimeter players Louie McCroskey and Tariq Atkins had some good moments. 5'11" seniors Dante Chisolm and Wesley Wicks did some nice things. Chisolm shot the ball and ran the team a bit better while Wicks displayed his trademark solid on ball defense. A pair of juniors up from last year's JV champs will compete with those guys for minutes. 6'0" junior Richard Jackson defended and shot well while fellow junior Rick Cadell displayed his fine outside stroke. Coach Oliver Antigua knows what he'll get from Grant and Laing but the work of the inexperienced seniors and juniors must have been encouraging as he looks ahead to the defense of the Ravens' city title. The difficult task for the Ravens will not be replacing the skill of McCroskey but replacing his leadership.
Upper Room, LI Coach Anderson: 'Upper Room Christian High School in Dix Hills, NY. This years team will be every exciting to watch. We are faster and bigger then last years team. Kevin (Bones) Gholson a junior can play the 2 or 3 one of the most explosive guards I have ever coached since Joel Suarez. In my opinion one of the most unrated players in the NYC. Also Ryan Trollinger a junior at 6 "4" is very strong and has improved his handle and shot. These our the only two returning players from last year's team. Jamal Linning transferred to Hempstead. Newcomers to the team are Shavar Burch 6 "4" wing player that has a lot of high division one college coaches looking at him. Shavar can shoot the three, leap out the gym and can play the 1 2 or 3, He will help us a lot. Sadraac Numa 5"10" a junior point solid kid can shot the three and penetrate the middle will help us out a lot at this position. He will be a steal for a college coach to have this kid run there team. Mateusz Sowa 6 "9 junior can play 4 or 5, plays hard and can shoot the three and go down low will help us a lot with our press. Jason Calderia, a seniorr can leap out the gym and plays solid D. Samuel Hashim senior is a 6ft ironman will do what every you ask him to do on the court. Farris Thomas soph 6 "3" will give us a great lift off the bench. Key games this year will be Martin Luther, OSNA, OSL, State Champions Brooklyn Friends. Along with Lawrence Woodmere St. Benedict's and to round it off Lu-Hi.
Woodmere Academy, LI Lawrence Woodmere Academy, 336 Woodmere Blvd. Woodmere, NY 11598 10/03 Coach Jeff Weiss: 'We were 17 - 8 last season, losing our last game 51 - 49 to Horace Mann in the league semifinals. Our top eight players will probably be four seniors and four sophs. The seniors are 5-10 point guard Jonathan Han (he's an excellent student, young for his class and will probabley prep next season just to be a year older entering college), 6-6 center Dimitri Razin , 6-0 guard Danny Bala (solidly built, last season's point will play more two guard for us this year) and 6-1 Sean McKloskey. The sophs are 6-5 Tyrone Nash (very bright, he's a Merit Scholarship student), 6-1 Chris Lareaa, 5-10 Ron (RJ) Rutledge Jr. (good shooter with good bloodlines) and 5-10 Jakor Riddick who missed most of last season with a broken knee, now fully healed. We'll play an uptempo game, beginning our season with a NYC tournament at Dalton, the Walt Whitman tournament in December where we begin with Uniondale and may finish with the host school. This season our league champion (hopefully us) will play up a division from 'C' to 'B' in the state tournament.' The school web site is www.lawrencewoodmere.org. LWA is a member of the Independent Private Parochial School Athletic League (IPPSAL) and Private School Athletic Association (PSAA). Their teams compete against other private schools on Long Island and in New Yorks five boroughs in baseball, softball, basketball, soccer, golf, tennis and volleyball. Those schools include Poly Prep and Horace Mann. 10/12/03 John P Miciotta: 'IS8 quarterfinals - The Playaz underclassmen team overwhelmed Woodmere who also brought underclassmen, and they held their own for the first period thanks to a senior Jonathan Han who shot well both on the drive and from long range. His slight build will likely keep some schools away but D-II's and low majors should keep an eye on Han this season. He's tough, smart and fearless and he went right at a team with good size and quickness and more than held his own. Tyrone Nash was also impressive with is ability to handle the ball with poise and make open shots. Dimitri Razin is an undersized but tough inside player who is sound fundamentally and poised enough to score in traffic. He should also draw D-II looks.' 7/22/03 John McCutcheon 'Summer basketball is back at the Island Garden in West Hempstead for the 5th straight summer. This year there is a record of 139 teams in age groups from 5th graders to high school featuring some of the best boys teams in the Metropolitan area. The high school boys league has some of the top teams on Long Island in St. Dominic, Chaminade, and Lawerence Woodmere as well as state powers St. Marys and the New York Ravens. At the current time, Lawerence Woodmere is leading the pack with a 4-0 record.'
Xaverian, Brooklyn, NY -- Coach Jack Alesi graduated star center Chris Taft from last season's team which ended its season at 19 -9, losing 76 - 56 to St Raymond in the CHSAA semifinals. Newsday rated the Clippers as the city's fourth best team behind the big three of Lincoln, St Rays and Christ the King. That team roster had only two other seniors besides Taft, ten juniors and precocious soph Saiquon Stone. They've got height and depth up front with the seniors 6-6 James Furlong, 6-4 Clive Chapman and 6-4 Deon Mozaele to complement 6-9 junior Mike Davis. The perimeter players are 6-2 senior wing men, Terrence Portis, 6-1 senior JR Mitchell, the heady 6-3 junior Saiquan Stone (he's like a second point guard, when he's on the floor) and 5-9 senior Brian Ameneiros, the team's best catch and shoot player. Lavance Fields will be the point guard with clever soph Brian McMikle as his primary backup. Once again the Clippers look ready to be a top four City team. 11/12/03 John P Miciotta ' For the past three seasons, Chris Taft had been a pillar of strength in the pivot for Jack Alesi's Clippers. With the 6'9" Pittsburgh recruit now gone, the team's strength lies in a group of athletic perimeter players, who played with Taft for part of those three seasons which saw him help the Clippers to three trips to the CHSAA semi-finals. That experience will likely come in handy for Taft's former team mates, since they have the talent, experience to get at least that far again, and perhaps, in a year where every team in the CHSAA has questions, a chance to break through to the finals. A quintet of players, three seniors and two juniors, will form the nucleus of a fine Xaverian team this year. Senior 6'2" shooter Junior Mitchell is a solid mid major prospect whose grades make him Ivy League recruitable while 6'4" junior Saiquan Stone is a kid who's underrated nationally because he doesn't produce big numbers but is perhaps one of the best all around players in the CHSAA. He brings length quickness, and an ability to score both inside and out. Although he's ostensibly a wing player he thinks the game and passes like a point guard. That's particularly important because it allows 5'10" junior LaVance Fields to really look to score aggressively. Make no mistake, Fields has become a better distributor with experience, but when he gets on a roll, and starts to look for his shot, Stone is often the one to take care of the ball, and make sure he gets enough touches. The other two players in the Clippers' nucleus are seniors Terrence Portis and Clyde Chapman. And both are important because they give the team a toughness that complements the skill of their teammates. Portis is a 6'2" wing player who defends all three perimeter spots and whose offense is imporving steadily. Chapman is a 6'4" player who battles inside for the Clippers. His slashing skills on offense have improved to the point where he may draw low D-I looks. Those five form a solid foundation for coach Alesi, but the development of several players who have yet to play varsity ball for the Clippers could turn them from a very good team into a contender for the city title. The headliner in this group is 6'10" junior center Mike Davis whose summer play with the Gauchos has earned him the acceptance of an early commitment on his part from Pittsburgh where, if form holds two years hence he will join his predecessor in the post for the Clippers, Taft. The big lefty is perhaps more athletic than Chris but is certainly not more polished nor poised. To become a productive player, and perhaps lift the Clippers to a great season, he will have to gain at least some of that poise and polish. Another big junior 6'7" 300 lb Louis Bradley, along with seniors James Furlong (6'6") and Dion Mozelle 6'5" have the potential to add excellent reserve strength in the pivot. Junior Chris Lowery is another explosive perimeter player who may also help inside, while junior Jake Stephens and highly regarded soph Brian McMikle may give the Clips more options at point guard and let coach Alesi move Fields off the ball at times. The Clippers' depth is second only to St. Ray's in the Catholic league. And while there's no star for the Clips, balance may well offset that. The ingredients for a championship run, as well as the coach to find the right combination are in place to bring the Clippers their first city title.' 11/8/03 Post-Gazette: Pitt lands top center - 6-foot-9 junior Xaverian Mike Davis. 10/27/03 NYHoops: Keith Mason's Team Rankings - 6. Xaverian- The best thing about Xaverian is they are young, with 64 PG Saiqoun Stone, 59 PG Levance Fields, 68 C Mike Davis all being juniors and 59 PG Brian McMickle is just a sophomore. But they also have some depth with 64 SF Clyde Chapman, 62 SG Terrance Portis and 62 SG Rudy Junior Mitchell. Junior is one of the major sleepers in the city, he is a lights out shooter, and is athletic. He recently suffered an injury to his knee at IS8, and hasnt played since, but it doesnt seem too serious and he should be back when the season starts. The fact that Xaverian has 3 point guards who look to pass first will help them, and with Junior they will have an unquestioned go to guy in the clutch.' 7/19/03 John P Miciotta -- High School Summer Challenge, 2003 @ St. Raymond HS: 'Xaverian The Clippers do not have one outstanding player to match the talent of Gavin Grant or Brian Laing, but they showed that they may be the second deepest team in the city behind the St. Ray's. With 6-9 Mike Davis and JR Mitchell in Georgia with the Gauchos the Clips played St. Benedict's tough for a half in their only loss, and knocked off Don Bosco and St. Pat's. Clyde Chapman did his typical quietly effective work inside while James Furlong ran the floor much better than in the past. Terrence Portis was stellar in all three games. He not only made shots and defended but used better judgment with respect to shot selection. Saiquan Stone had intelligent all-around games, scoring from inside and out and helping on the boards when needed. With all the good things that happened to the Clippers, the best thing was the improved play of point guard Lavance Fields. He's made a complete return to good health from knee surgery that caused him to miss his freshman year and that, plus improved judgment mean that he could be destined for big things in the future.'
