Life Skills & Academic Coach: Ted Gustus, Jr. (33 years). Players' profiles -- Nathaniel Lester: Jr. 6’5, 180 lbs. 23 ppg. 10 rbpg. Nathaniel is entering his third season playing varsity basketball at Canarsie High School. Each year his game has improved tremendously. As a freshman he started for the varsity averaging 8 points per game. In his sophomore year, he started and average 23 points per game and 10 rebounds. As a junior, Nathaniel has spent most of the summer strengthen his body, perfecting his jumpshot, improving his ball handling and traveling the AAU circuit with the Panthers. He is a student-athlete that is on a mission, and he is gradually improving his game. Last year he led Canarsie to a 10-4 league record, placing 2nd in the tough Brooklyn division. Carl Munnerlyn, Jr.: Sr. 5’9 150 lbs. 7 ppg. 2.7 steals pg. 5 asst. Carl is a true point guard. He loves setting up his teammates and making others look good. During Canarsie’s 10 game winning streak, Carl was the starting point guard. Carl worked greatly on his game during the summer months. He is super quick and fast. He has a lethal midrange jumpshop off the dribble. Carl has great jumping ability. Evander Little: Sr. 6’0 165 lbs.DNP. Evander has a deadly jumpshot from 3 point range. He is exceptionally fast and he jumps pretty high for his size. He is a very good on the ball defender, applying relentless pressure on the opposing guards. Piankhi Huchinson: Sr.6’7, 200 lbs. 10 ppg. 5 rbpg. 3 blks. Piankhi is considered by many to be the best big man in the city. His uncanny ability to block shots and run the court are two great attributes. He has a very good midrange jumpshot. He shoots free throws very well. Alden Gibbs: Sr. 6’3, 187 lbs. DNP. A defensive specialist who can also score points. Alden is a fierce rebounder, outstanding defender on and off the ball. He plays with a high level of intensity. Ryan has unbelievable talent and the will to win. His winning attitude is contagious, no matter what team or sport he is playing. Our Savior New American, LI 11/25/05 Eric Jaklitsch: 'Last year was a “down year" for the Pioneers as they finished 19-16 overall. Gone from last years team were key seniors James Tchana ( The group of newcomers is impressive as it features some
very talented athletes. The first talented player is 6’10” Teeng
Akol from 7’5” sophomore Ring Ayeul moved up from the JV last year. Ayeul has improved dramatically over the summer as he has put on over 40 pounds with a personal trainer and worked on his skills and conditioning with personal trainer Jerry Powell. Ayeul will provide the team with another rebounder, shot blocker, and defender. Underclassmen of note are 6’5” FR Leek Leek, 6’4” soph Marcus Damaus, 6’2” soph Shiloh Pitt, and 5’11” freshman Ishac Pitt who are currently playing JV but may move up to the varsity during the year. Key games and tournaments in our schedule are: Nov.
25-26th Bull City Classic in Durham NC , Dec. 2nd @
Our key reserves will be senior forward Herschel Celestine, junior guard Darrell "Mr. Defense" Nelson, junior Nigel "Rodman" Francis and junior center Dwayne Wright. Other players who should help us are senior guard Johnny Russell, junior forward Omar Thompson, freshman wing Jay Poleon, junior forward Simeon JnMarie, junior center Givens "The Beast" Lubin and athletic junior Durrell Laing. Last year we were 8-14 and did not compete day in and day out in a very competitive league. We did however place all seven of our seniors in college and we are very proud of that. This year we will be an up tempo aggressive team who I feel can be "special" if our key players take care of their academic issues and work harder in class. This is the first team at Tilden High School in my 13 years where this issue could stop us from possibly achieving all of our Team and individual goals! My staff of associate head coach John "Biggie" Harris, Howard Hughes, Michael George and Jody King are second to none and will do much of the nuts and bolts coaching this season as I try and help my wife Karin care of our 15 month old twins Griffin and Gabrielle. Good luck to all of our opponents and have a great season.' Wadleigh Tigers, NYC. 12/21/05 PSAL.org: Wadleigh Rules Harlem and Sets Sights on the City. 12/11/05 Daily News: Loving every minute of it. Wadleigh Tigers' big guy stops Stepinac. 11/14/05 Coach Michael Crump: 'Last season in my rookie year as a coach, the Wadleigh Tigers were undefeated in conference play going a perfect 16-0 with two impressive wins over 8th ranked Manhattan Center and two wins over Urban Peace Academy, Murray Bergtum, Norman Thomas, and Hunter College, all conference teams that had over .500% records during the regular season. We had impressive non league wins over Upper Room Christian Academy from Dix Hills and we scrimmaged top 10 teams including Paul Robeson, Campus Magnet and Benjamin Banneker earning split decisions in all contests. The season's overall record was 24-4 with losses to Manhattan Center in the Borough Playoffs, Lincoln in the PSAL City Playoffs and Benjamin Banneker in a non-league game (they were later disqualified for 5th year players but numerically we lost in spite of the forfeit) and a loss to McKinnet High School in a non league game. We went to the Elite 8 joining schools such as Grady, Manhattan Center, Wings, FDA, Kennedy, Banneker and Lincoln.. Last year we were led in scoring by Jarell Mills a transfer from Rice with a 24 ppg and a second team All City Honors. We also had Chris Noel the most efficient point guard and Jeramine Abraham a 6'7 center with an NBA vertical. Those three seniors combined for 51ppg and 13 rpg. We indeed lost some fire power because we had a team average of 96 ppg scored against opponents. These three players have moved on to college and prep school. This year, our leading scorers are Dominique Jones, who averaged 18ppg last year and is expected to be an all borough or all city candidate and Steven Liebert the 6'4 220 lb power foward will be a beast for us. The tenacious defense of Darling Duran, a Kennedy High School transfer from last year will make opposing guards work. Phillip Perrier decided to stay at Wadleigh instead of going to Cardinal Hayes and he is a scoring and defensive threat. The rest of the team has good role players in physically elite and explosive Diloo Brown, sharpshooter Mike Dziewit, bruiser Marlon Morgan, versatile 6'6 Davon Henry and 6-5 shot blocker Delano Prawl. Julien Allen, Jeremy Bell and Morris Guei will make a contribution later in the season as they were upgraded from JV to varsity this year. Our weaknesses are team defense because we are small and our tall players are not physical but more finesse players. We also must find a way to make up for losing 50 points when bench players are now expected to score more and not rely on last year's offensive minded talents. We will struggle, but no question vie for Manhattan and make noise in the playoffs. Our non league schedule has us against the best talent in the state and out of the state against Stepinac, Nazereth, Paul Robeson, Thurgood Marshall, Jefferson High School, Our Savior Lutheran and tentatively Hartford HS and East Orange HS. We look forward to a good season. The assistant coaches are James "Turtle" Williams (Abyssinian Church), Robert Coleman (Wadleigh alumnus), Deborah Howell (girl's varsity coach), and Duke Ferguson (Harlem Hellfire Varsity Football Team).'
