2001 AAU teams:

Albany City Rocks - director and coach, Jim Hart, coach s Tom Huerter and Tony 'Red' Bruin (yes, that Tony 'Red' Bruin). Jim Hart and Chris Odin of the NJ RAP are the prime movers behind June's Rumble in the Bronx @ Fordham University.  The Rock's are last season's New York State's 17's and 16's AAU champions and will be defending those titles this year.  The 17s feature Schenectady's 6-8 Rashaun Freeman,  Utica Proctor's Oliver Rogers,  CBA's Sean McCloskey (younger brother of Matt),  Burnt Hill's 6-5 Adam Maguire,  Colonie's 6-7 Anthony Bruin Jr and Broad Albin's 6-2 Mike Beers.  The key 16's are Schenectady's Sean Powell,  Albany High's Abar Miller, Cohoes' Paul Izzo and 6-6 LaSalle freshman Josh Peleteer. Besides the Rumble and AAU sectionals the Rocks will be in Minneapolis on 5/5 & 5/6 for the Howard Pulley tournament, as well as Augusta's Peach Jam and Olando's Nike Super Showcase in July.

Bronx Gauchos - director Paul Brown.  All Gaucho teams will play in NY State AAU regionals and some will make it to the nationals.   open team -- coach Dwayne Mitchell,  Adrian Walton,  Wilbur Williams,  Jermaine Pringle,  Laurence Palmer,  David Sills,  Tyrone Marshall.  The team is leaving Monday,  4/9 for a tournament in Bagnoullette,  France and they will be playing at IS8 after that.  

17 u Coach Richard Burke,  Shaun Wynn,  Shagari Alleyne,  Kendell Provett,  Ronnie Wyatt.  In April the team will play at Charlie Weber and the Delaware Shootout.  They will be in the Rumble in the Bronx this June.  

16 u Coach Dwayne Mitchell.  This group is the defending national 15 u AAU champs with Marlon Smith,  Joe Sandberg,  Matt Saunders, Trevor Chambers, Alex Buzzbee,  Manny Estevez, Dexter Hall, Nick Nieves, George Skrelja, Armon Muller and Chris Altieri.

15 u Coach Mark Jones and asst. Shahee Martin.  This team was last year's national AAU runner up and the 1999 national champions.  They are Ronald Ramon,  Russell Robinson,  Yadda Gaines,  Shahee Martin jr,  Albert Forbes,  Mike Watson and Maurice Walters.  

14 u Coach Tommie Swinton and asst Chuck Rosenthal.   The team will be in the Jam Fest this weekend and the Ct. Select tournament later in April.  Roster includes Jarrell Mills,  Mike Franklin,  Steve Walker,  Joseph Vines,  Terrell Elliston,  Scott Rosenthal, Jessie Santanic, Wayne Etejukel.

13 u Coach Dwayne Campbell, asst. John Ruiz. Roster includes Terrell McKenzie,  John Ruiz,  Darryl Crawford,  Edgar Sosa,  Kashit Pratt,  Peter Hoffman.

  3/26/01 NJNYHoopWatcher:  'The defending National Champion New York Gauchos started off the new season with a win at the Sam Rines Tournement in PA. The Gauchos went 5-0 on route to a 72-68 win over The Central Jersey Hornets. Joe Sandberg led the Gauchos with 24 points including 12 in final 3 minutes to overcome a 5 point deficit. Matt Saunders added 18 and Trevor Chambers added 12 Alex Buzzbee played great defense on the Hornets Grant Billimeir holding him to just 14 points. The bench added strong support from Manny Estevez, Dexter Hall, Nick Nieves, George Skrelja, Armon Muller and Chris Altieri.'   3/24/01 Nathan Blue's Real Scout Hoop Summary --   AAU teams & players -- Ronald Ramon, Yadda Gaines, Shaun Wynn, Marlon Smith, Russell Robinson. 

Brooklyn All-Stars - Mark Yantsos, Director. In its third season, the BAS program has now expanded all the way down to the 13U age division. The program continues to grow and attract more talent, as this year's teams include players who will travel from as far as Suffolk County to play. Tentative summer schedule includes the AAU Regionals at Island Garden, the L.I. Lightning Invitational, the Garden State Sharpshooters tournament, as well as various summer leagues. Here are the tentative rosters:

17U (Blue) - Coach Lou Rizzo. This team is made up of all St. Edmund Prep players: Corey Clark, A.J. Caddle, Anthony Gaynor, Joel Horsford, Matt Irwin, Ryan Murdoch, J.T. Plant, Anthony Rizzo, Mike Russo, Kwesi Samuels, and Andrew Trerotola.

17U (White) - Coach Jayson Kiang. Roster includes Donald Brown (St. John the Baptist), Ryan Johnson (St. John the Baptist), Will Kuntz (Packer), Pete Lehmann (St. John the Baptist)

13U - Coaches Lou Rizzo and Joe DiGarbo.  Team is Neil Ahmad, Javon Parham, Jamie Eason, Primo Cassarino, Agron Dreaj, Kreshnik Kukaj, Lou Rizzo, Richard Torres, Roberto DiLeo, Albert Boghdadi, Chris Lubrano,  Ciro Patalano and Michael Alexis.'

Brooklyn Beasts  Coach Jake Edwards. 4/15/01 Shomebbal:  'This weekend in Wayne Simone's Classic in Conn. the Brooklyn Beasts beat the Albany City Rocks led by Quincy Douby with 21 points, and Roscoe Biggs with a 15 points and 10 assists. With a couple of pieces missing from the team that went to the championship game in Providence, the Beasts failed to win their pool with an upsetting loss to the Wolfpack. But with the kids returning after the Easter vacation the Beasts are looking for a very competitive tournament for our 16-under and our senior team for the month of May.'

Brooklyn Bridge  Coach Khalid Green.  4/01 Current IS8 roster includes Sebastian Telflair, John Quintana, Brian Williams and Mitchell Beauford.  4/12/01 Khalil Manigaulte: For 16 and under we have the following: Elliah Karron Clarke,  Jamal "Tank" Dart,  Brian Williams,  Mitchell Beauford,  Andrew Carpenter,  Kirk Bunn,  Ramel Bradley,  Cassius Carpenter,  Stewart Graddick,  Dominic Osei,  Kyle Neptune.  This was last years city-wide championship team. We'll have teams from the 5th grade level, all the way up to the high school division. Brooklyn Rams - 8/17/01  Alton Ritter: 'The Brooklyn Rams AAU team is the hot, sleeper team of the moment. They entered 4 teams(College, Senior, Junior & Midget) in the "Show Me What You Got" tournament at I.S. 275 (Rockaway Ave. & Linden Blvd.) in Brooklyn, which  is run by Jake Edwards (Brooklyn Beasts and Grady Asst. Coach) and all 4 teams made it to the playoffs. Their Midget, Senior & College teams will be playing in their Championship games on Saturday, Aug. 18th at I.S. 275 @ 3pm, 5:30pm and 7pm, respectively. Their Junior team made it to the final four. The Rams 13-under squad won the PAL Championship at Caton Park on Friday, Aug. 17th and the Rams 15-under squad plays for the Hudde Championship at Hudde (Nostrand & Ave. M) on Sunday, Aug. 19th @ 12:30pm. The Rams 16-under squad are in the playoffs of the Beacon 269 Invitational the week of Aug. 20th. The Rams 17-under squad is headed to Newton, Mass. to compete in the Play for Peace Invitational the weekend of Aug. 24-26. They have been together for 4 years and have achieved AAU state medal rounds in all years. 80 Park aka NYC Panthers - director and coach Craig (Kat) Keyes.  3/01 Kat: '80 Park will travel three times this summer -  to Converse Jam Fest in Providence,  All Ohio on Memorial Day Weekend and to BCI in Dallas from July 7th through 11th. We'll play in Pro Style and Island Garden tournaments.'   2/25/01  Winter IS8 -- 80 Park won the Biddie and Midget games while Riverside Church took the Junior game. In the Biddie game the Wolfpack's Ervin Walker scored a game high 20 points, including five treys, but 80 Park held on for a 42 - 39 win.  Biddie MVP, Vincent Natut had 14 for 80 Park while Ryan Davis (6),  Malik Boothe (6),  Charles Jenkins (4),  Nick Walsh (4) and Ian Umpiere (4) all contributed to the win. 80 Park had an easier time in the Midget game against Brooklyn USA taking it 63 - 45.  They got balanced scoring from Jeff Outler (10),  Danny Green (7),  Chris Rhoden (7) and Mike Johnson (7).  

Flatbush Youth Association (FYA),  director Carlton Screen.  Check out FYA web site.   4/2/01 Coach Carlton Screen:  'Tentative IS8 roster -- Wood Souffrant, Malcolm Peterkin, Ahkeem McKinnon, Damek Mair, Jamaal Carty,  Alister Francique, Michael Kelly, Fabian Richards, Dorian Wood, Sherwin Harry.   3/27/01 Carlton Screen:  'The Flatbush Youth Association have been very busy in the last few weeks.We won the 12 year old division of the Kips Bay Boys and Girls Club Sectionals Basketball Tournament on Sunday March 25, 2001 by the score 54-37.  Kerwin Cox was the MVP; he played outstanding offense and defense, an FYA trademark.  Our 10 year old team came in second place losing to Kips Bay by the score 51-50.  We went to MSG on Sunday March 18, 2001 with 50 FYA members to give support to Woody Souffrant, Malcolm Peterkin, Ahkeem McKinnon, Damek Mair members of  the Grady H.S. team, NYC PSAL 2001 Champions.  I went to West Virgina to support Calvin Bowman, 1st team All Big East, on Senior Night.  They had a turnout of 16,000 people chanting Calvin's name. On Wednesday March 7th I went to MSG to support Calvin in the first round of the Big East Tournament.'

Hoop Street Gang, Baknhoop:  'Hoop Street Gang, Inc is A Not For Profit organization has been in existence since 1976 and has been helping student-athletes through basketball receive exposure and post high school playing opportunities. Presently Hoop Street is participating in the Harlem P.A.L.18 and under league. Abyssinian and Hoop Street look to be the top two teams. Hoop Street will be participating in the I.S.8 Nike Classic in April. The team is comprised of the top players from Rockland County as well as several players from the Bronx. Edane Barton from Spring Valley, Ryan Pehush and Phillip Fleurey of Albertus Magnus, Hernan Perez, South Bronx are the top players. Former Hoop Street players who made an impact in college are Chester Felts at Colgate, Rashamel Jones at Connecticut and Larry Abney for Fresno State. Long Island Roadrunners - The Roadrunners started in 1994 under the direction of Dave Edwards. It has had great success in attracting the best talent on Long Island (ex. Barry Baker-1999 Suffolk County Player of the Year, Will McClurkin-2000 Suffolk County Player of the Year). The class of 2000 Open Team had all five starters move on to play basketball at the collegiate level. Will McClurkin (UMBC), Damion Fray (Seton Hall), Justin Simon (Yale), Corey Hinnant (St. Peter's) and Vernon Alonzo (John Jay).  4/1/01  Steve:  'This year the Roadrunners will definitely live up to their name as they travel throughout the country this spring and summer playing in the most competitive tournaments available. April: the TTP Spring Fling, the Charlie Weber International @ Villanova and the adidas Hoop Challenge @ Sacred Heart. May: the Spiece Run 'N Slam in Indiana, the Northeast Hoops Tournament @ SUNY Albany, the Garden State Tournament in New Jersey and the Gym Rat Tournament in Albany. Besides the Spring Fest and the Rumble the RAP have two April tourneys - at Villanova from 4/6 - 4/8 and at Yale on 4/13 to 4/15 for Ct. Although they are capable of competing with A-level teams, the more exprienced and talented A-level teams usaully win the games (e.g. the Gauchos). This team is the boy's 14U aau team that is being coached by Brett Wilson. Brett has done a good job with the player's that he has. The players are Andrew Kost pg #4, Bryant Lassiter pg #20, Brett Wilson  sg #12, Louis Bontempo sg #14, Carson Niehuff sf #31, Kevin Woodcheke sf #33,  Joseph Meglio pf-c #23, Aikeem Vanderhorst pf-c #21, and Joseph Bassett pf-c #40. The team's best player is 12yr old Brett Wilson. He is from Central Islip and is the team's leading scorer and most talented player. Both Clark Francis of Hoop Scoop Online and Winston Kelly of Gameball magazine agree that Brett is the best player on this team. Brett also plays for Riverside Church and is being coached by Kenny Pretlow. The Silver Bullets are playing at the Island Garden in the spring League. They are off to a 2-0 start. On 4/8 the Silver Bullets defeated the South Shore Warrios 49-42. Brett Wilson completed a three point play in the last minute to seal the victory. Aikeem Vanderhorst scored 12 and Brett Wilson 9. On 4/22 the Silver Bullets destroyed the Syosset Terp's 69-29. The Bullets had a balanced scoring attack. Aikeem Vanderhorst, Brett Wilson, Andrew Kost and Bryant Lassiter had 14,11,10 &10 resectively. This coming weekend 4/28 &4/29 the Bullets will be in the Bronx at Fordham University for the Chase the Game AAU tournament.

St. Michael - coach and director, Steve Ricciardi. 4/18/01  Steve Ricciardi: 'St Michael's 14u, 16u, 17u and 19u teams are seeded in the top four for their regional tournaments. Each level of the organization expects to be going to the nationals this summer.  Coach Ryan Peterson coaches the 17's and 19's - essentially, it's the same roster as the organization does not rely on seniors or prep players. It's the roster that played at the NJ Hoops Showcase. The 16's are coached by Carlos Cueto with Shyam Martinez and Gabe Hernandez as the key players.  Steve Ricciardi Jr is the 15 u coach ; Jason Cameron and Hugo Caverjal are his best players. T1T Playaz - director and coach, Jimmy Salmon.  The T1T Spring Fest is the weekend of 3/30 to 4/1, the first major NJ AAU tournament of the season.  This year's key 17 under players are St Anthony's Elijah Ingram,  Germantown Academy's Lee Melchioni and Camden's Eric Davis.  The 16 & under roster has Sean Banks,  Marquis Webb and Jamar Nutter.  4/16/01 The nine man NJ Showcase roster was three juniors and six sophs.  The juniors were Seve Cousins,  Elijah Ingram and  John Winchester; the sophs -  Darryl Watkins,  Jamar Nutter,  Marquez Webb,  Willie Irick,  Sean Banks and Bashir Mason.   4/16/01 NJ Hoops: Tim Thomas Playaz Showcase Preview. 4/6/01  The T1T 16 & 17 under teams have a busy schedule this summer continuing with this weekend's Converse Hoop Jam in Providence.  For April 13-15  they'll be at the Connecticut Select Challenge at Storrs.  On April 28th and 29th they'll be at IS8 for the regular season and they may well be back from 5/9 through 5/11 for the playoffs. Other tourneys are Howard Pulley Invitational (5/4 - 5/6),  Brooklyn USA Challenge at LIU (5/19),  Bob Gibbons, Durham NC (5/26 - 5/28),  Chicago Fire @ DePaul (6/8 - 6/10),  Rumble in the Bronx (6/15 - 6/17),  BET Classic @ George Washington U. Washington Heights Warriors -  3/21/01 Abdu-Allah Torrence:  'The Warriors Elite 17 and Under Team will be traveling to some of the major East Coast AAU and exposure Tournaments this Spring and Summer.  TTP, JamFest, and CT. Select to name a few will be attend by the Warriors Elite this year. The team features some of the up and coming talent in New York City form Public and Catholic School. Kiril Wachsmann, Jerome Simmons, Christian Brown, Sam Moise and Zack Ozuna to name a few will competing nationally with Elite this year.
