Ahead of the Game, Brooklyn NY 6/5/03 Lawrence McGugins (aotgbasketball@aol.com): 'Ahead of The Game is a Not-For-Profit Sports program (501c3), which facilitates a course of preparation for student-athletes whose goal is to participate in Division I, II or III basketball. The Ahead of the Game development philosophy centers around a holistically based foundation that focuses on various components including: academics, life skills, family, interpersonal counseling, vocational counseling, sports management counseling, mentorship, strength and conditioning, and individual skill development. To further demonstrate the impact of our outreach, the Brooklyn Borough President, Marty Markowitz, has endorsed our program, as a leading development initiative for addressing the various social, educational and athletic needs of urban youth. Jersey Shore Lightning, NJ 5/29/03 eljay24seven@aol.com: 'The Jersey Shore Lightning 13u AAU basketball team led by coach David Johnson is on a 18 game winning streak, winning the New Jersey Division 1 State Championship, the AAU Spring Classic in Orlando, Florida, the Maryland USSA State Championship, The Nike shootout in Columbus, Ohio and is now defending their championship in the All-American Cage Classic. This team has qualified as an 8th seed in this years' AAU Nationals in Memphis, Tenn. The USSSA World Championship in Fort Wayne, Indiana and is working on a berth in this years' Cage Classic Nationals in Dayton, Ohio.' Juice All*Stars 5/31/03 PrepStars Top 25 AAU Poll has # 14. Notes: Juice picked up lean 7-footer Jermaine Bell from the Tim Thomas Playaz and it should pay major dividends for a team lacking up front. They also added the 6-9 Goodrich, so now they have a frontcourt to complement their backcourt of Telfair-Bradley. Telfair was sensational at the TOC, scoring 24 points against the Tennessee Travelers and putting 20 and 6 assists up against the N.C. Gaters. Mensah had 10 in the loss to Atlanta. Next Tourney: June 20-22 Rumble in the Bronx (N.Y.); July 12-14 Three Stripes; July 22-26 Big Time (Nev.) 5/13/03 PrepStars Top 25 AAU Poll has # 21. Juice All-Stars (Brooklyn, N.Y.) - (5-1). Results: Idle. Tournament Finishes: Lost in the semifinals of the Texas Classic. Key Wins: Long Island Panthers; New York Ravens; Atlanta Celtics; World Wide Renegades; Michigan Mustangs. Key Losses: Sports Academy. Coach: Dwayne Morton Affiliation: Adidas. Top Dog: PG Sebastian Telfair (6-0, 170, SR, #31). Starters: G Ramel Bradley (6-2, 175, SR, #33); G Kojo Mensah (6-1, 175, SR, #23); F James Barrett (6-5, SR, #10); BF Sean James (6-9, SR, #12) Others: WG Nyan Boateng (6-3, JR, #15); G Eugene Lawrence (6-0, SR); G-WF Saquon Stone (6-4, JR); WF Nickolas Harrington (6-6, SR, #14); WG Jamel White (6-2, SR) Notes: Obviously, this backcourt can hang with anyone - and it did in Houston. Telfair and Bradley combined for more than 50 against the Panthers, but it was James who held his own against the Atlanta Celtics formidable front line. Look for Vernon Goodrich, a Brooklyn native who will be playing with the World Wide Renegades, to play with the All-Stars at a few tournaments. Telfair is still among the best - if not the top - point guard in the class while Bradley is underrated and has flourished since attending IMG in Florida. The key is whether Morton can get enough from his guys up front. Next Tourney: May 23-25 Bob Gibbons Tournament of Champions (N.C.) 4/11/03 PrepStars Top 25 AAU Poll includes Juice All-Stars (Brooklyn, N.Y.) Coach: Dwayne Morton. Affiliation: Adidas. Others: WG Nyan Boateng (6-3, JR); WG Taj Gibson (6-7, JR); G Eugene Lawrence (6-0, SR); G-WF Saquan Stone (6-4, JR). Strength: Quickness, Weakness: Size. Notes: Obviously, this backcourt can hang with anyone. Telfair is still among the best if not the top point guard in the class while Bradley is underrated and has flourished since attending IMG in Florida. The key is whether Morton can get enough from his guys up front. Opening Tourney: Texas Classic (Houston). (I used to head the Brooklyn All-Stars but I gave that up, shutting it down for 2003, so I'm coaching with Lightning this year.) Long Island Lightning - 16U - Roster: Maurice Charlton, Courtney Cooke, Mathew Devot, John Filosa, Ryan Hollett, Lamar McLeod, Christian Salvage, Andy Slizewski, and John Yancigay. We also have few players on my team who belong in the top 10 rankings for 8th graders. We are the top 14 AAU team in New York and we placed 10th last year at the 13 AAU nationals. The players on our team are Malcolm Pope jr, Cory Fisher, Melquan Bolding, Joshua Spivey, Darius Gabriel, Kashif Pratt, Brandon Walters among others. So far this year we are 18-0. We will be playing in the 14u championship on Memorial Day at the Island Garden. If you have time to check us out we will be busy from now until August with the 14u BCI nationals, the 14u AAU nationals and a few other weekend tournaments.' Long Island Panthers, director and coach, Gary Charles. 5/31/03 PrepStars Top 25 AAU Poll Notes: Wright proved he is one of the top point guards in the class once again, averaging 25 points per game and putting up 22 in the loss to SoCal and 24 in the win over the Alabama Challenge. Clarke's ankle injury in the game against Blessed hampered the team the rest of the way. Payne didn't make the trip due to academic commitments back at Northfield Mount Hermon. Noah averaged 10 boards per game in North Carolina. Next Tournament: June 20-22 Rumble in the Bronx (N.Y.); June 26-29 DC Pro-AM 5/13/03 PrepStars Top 25 AAU Poll has # 25. Long Island Panthers (Long Island, N.Y.) - (18-2) *NR. Results: Beat Montrose Christian to win a division title at the Charlie Weber (D.C.); Defeated Baltimore Bombers in the semifinals. Tournament Finishes: Lost in the quarterfinals of the Spring Fling (N.Y.); Won American Divison of the Jam Fest (R.I.); Lost in the quarterfinals of the Texas Classic; Won a division at Charlie Weber (D.C.) Key Wins: DC Assault; Inland; Pump 'N Run Key Losses: Gauchos; Juice All-Stars Coach: Gary Charles/Khalid Green Affiliation: adidas. Top Dog: PG Josh Wright (6-1, SR, #2). Starters: PG Kashif Payne (5-7, JR); WF Kiwan Smith (6-7, SR); F Rashon Clarke (6-6, SR); C Joakim Noah (6-10, SR) Others: G Cameron Tyler (5-11, SR); G Kevin Spann (5-11, SR); G Dwayne Johnson (5-8, SR); G Cliff Clinkscale (6-1, SR); F Antonio Pena (6-7, JR); WG/WF Danny Green (6-4, SR); WF/WG Reed Witman (6-7, SR) Notes: Wright, who didn't play in the Charlie Weber tourney, is an underrated scoring point guard who finally gets a chance to step out of the shadows of Charlie Villanueva and Mike Jones from a year ago. He's being recruited by just about everyone in the Big East and North Carolina has gotten involved of late. Noah is an active, athletic big man who is getting better every tournament. He's also the son of the former tennis star, Yannick. Payne may be small, but he can run a club and Clarke plays much bigger and stronger than his 6-6 frame suggests. Next Tournament: May 23-25 Tournament of Champions (N.C.) LPAC (Latino Pastoral Athletic Center) Knights - 170 th Street and Jerome Avenue, Bronx. Ruben Taverez, director. Long Island Roadrunners - Steve Harney: 'Schedule: Here are the tournaments we are registered in so far. We might add one or two as we move forward. the facts: Russell, 'Yadda' and Ronald were all named to the 2002-2003 CHSAA League Second Team as juniors. Special guards with uniquely different talents. Russell is a silky smooth pure shooter with NBA range right now. He has proven that he can also handle the ball having played the point some for Rice HS this past season. He needs to muscle up without losing his outside touch. 'Yadda' is a classic slasher who knows how to get the basket and finish. Solidly built with great hands, Yadda quietly gave Edgewater's Darius Washington, 37 points this past season. Ronald is the oil that runs the machine. His heady play and unselfishness sometimes get overlooked, but is never unappreciated. The son of a former Dominican Republic pro, Ronald can do it all. Shoot, defend, distribute and of course lead. Teddy, Lawrence and Eugene are all talented guards who add defensive presence and scoring in the backcourt. Jamar and James are both physically strong forwards who can both score from the outside as well as around the glass. Up front we're young with Taj, Mike and Curtis, wing-spanning the paint. If you even think about shooting they're trying to block it. the schedule: Completed tournaments: Spring 2003- CYP Portchester, NY. There's no question they have a great trio of guards in Robinson, Gaines and Ramon, but the big guys are young and were unable to handle D.J. White in a loss to the Lasers and Big Al Jefferson in a setback to the Jackson Tigers. Georgia Tech and St. John's continue to lead for the sweet-shooting Robinson while Gaines and Ramon are getting looks from several Big East schools. Robinson put up 21 points, including four first-half trifectas, in the championship game against YOMCA, and he also had 20 against Team Texas, 17 vs. Nike Team Florida and 18 in the win over the Arizona Stars. Some have shied away because he's only 6-2, but Georgia Tech and St. John's are the two leaders as of now. Gaines, who is looking at Pittsburgh, BC and Providence, had 15 against AZ Stars and 14 in the win over Team Florida. Ramon is often overlooked, but he's the glue and is receiving interest from Pittsburgh, Seton Hall and Providence. Ramon (ankle) and Kelly didn't play in the loss to the St. Louis Eagles at Boo Williams. Next Tourney: May 24-26 Memorial Day Classic (Bloomington, Ind.)

Russell Robinson from New York (Rice) NY with 22 points, won easily

Robinson, 6'0 Jr Ronald Ramon from Bronx (All Hallows) NY,
and 6'3 Jr Sunditta Gaines from Briarwood (Archbishop Malloy) NY and,
despite their youth and inexperience inside, more than enough talent with
6'5 James Barnett from Brooklyn (Lincoln) NY, 6'9 Frosh Curtis
Kelly from New York (Rice) NY and 6'8 Soph Mike Davis from Brooklyn
(Xaverian) NY to win the championship. We also have to give Gauchos head
coach Julius Allen, who formerly was an assistant coach at Long Island
University, credit for doing an excellent job coaching, finding the right
chemistry, and helping restore the rivalry between the Gauchos and New York
Riverside Church, which used to be one of the biggest rivalries at any level

New York Ravens 4/18/03 John P Miciotta: ' Although the Ravens bring with them a number of fine players, the key to their success may well be coach Artie Green. They play very hard, they look for each other on offense and talk to each other on defense and Coach Green skillfully navigates them through tremendously competitive spring and summer schedule which includes the Ravens first appearance at IS8, The Adidas 3 Stripes Classic and the Kingwood Classic in Houston. As many of our readers know, the core of the Ravens' team comes from the CHSAA Champion St. Raymond's Ravens. That means their two mainstays will be a pair of gifted senior-to-be forwards Gavin Grant and Brian Laing. At. 6'6" Grant has always shown terrific perimeter skills but this year became a more complete player by improving his rebounding and intensity. The improvement makes him a top prospect nationally and a key recruit for ACC and Big East programs. Laing is a 6'4" warrior who scores primarily in transition and on the boards. He is a solid mid major recruit who will draw some high major looks. How many of those he gets will be determined by how he improves his perimeter skills this summer. Keep in mind though that with his intensity and quickness he can defend many wing players so it's just a matter of developing offensive skills. 6'4" junior-to-be Rickey Torres, who was also a key contributor to St. Ray's may be New York's best shooter regardless of class and will likely emerge as the team's third scoring option. Other St. Ray' Ravens who will help the New York Ravens will be 6'6" senior to be Franklin Elgar a raw athlete who runs the floor and has quick hops. 6'5" junior-to-be Chris Bethel is an aggressive rebounder. 5'10 senior-to-be Wesley Wicks is a quick on the ball defender. These guys all bring high school varsity experience with them and a number of players from St. Ray's j.v. champs also may help the Summer Ravens' cause. Among those players will Rick Cadell is a terrific shooter who is beginning to develop playmaking skills while Richard Jackson, a 6'2" wing and Shaun Hilliard a 6'5" forward will vie for minutes. According to informed sources these guys will be joined buy a pair of terrific prospects who are not a part of the St. Ray's program. Senior-to-be John Oates of Don Bosco is a smart hard working post player while junior-to-be Greg "playstation" Johnson, a city native prepping at Holderness School in New Hampshire is a quick floor leader who is obviously talented but whom I have not seen play since 8th grade. My memory of his terrific speed, court vision and defense makes me excited to see what kind of player he's become.' NYC Finest Basketball 4/18/03 Roberto Diaz: 'Coaches: Roberto E. We merge them with the Unique Allstars & we took the Stephon Marbury tournament. We beat the home team named Family. The championship was held on August 9th in Coney Island. They also won the Ron Artest 8 & under held in Queensbridge. We beat Kips Bay Boys Club team on August 30th for the championship. Our dedication in our program is the reasons why we are successful this year. We actually finished our summer games on Wednesday Sept. 9th. That was the Lefrak City tournament held in section two. Our 8 & under, 10 under played together in the championship game & we came in second place under coach Wise. The players on both teams played one hell of a game except we fell short by three points. On behalf onthe ShowTime Punishers program I would like to take time out say thank you to all of the players who played with us up to this piont. Espeacially to the parents for a allowing thier kids to play for us. Right now we are taking a break so that players & parents can focus on the books. Ryan Clement, Bob Humphrey and Rob Rastetter led the way but the Long Island Lightning were too big and just wore the Stingrays down 53-44 in the Quarter Finals. The 13's had a great year finishing (19-12 ) runner-up's at Rebounds, St Patrick Day Tournament N.J and losing in the finals of the Stingray Classic (Keith O'Connell, Stingrays MVP) to the nationally ranked Conn.North Stars. All in all a good season. Stingrays) -- The boys have been playing well lately and here is a little history of the last few tournaments. Over the last 4 tournaments the Stingray 15's have won the S.I.Stingrays Spring Classic with a 4-0 record, won the Chase the Game Tournament in Yonkers, NY with a 3-0 record and last weekend went to the championship game of the Monmouth Power Slamfest (3-0 in our pool) but fell 4pts short in the final to the host team 49-45. Last week finished in second place (2-1) at the Atlantic Club Tournament,Wall Township N.J.(13-2 over the last 15 games) This week the boys will compete in the "Best of the Best Eastern Regional Championship" in Newark New Jersey! The best part about these boys is the fact that they all come from different schools on the Island but have played together now for the better part of 4 yrs. The team leader is Frank Terranova (St.Joe by the Sea Varsity) also from Sea's JV is Ryan Hennessey . We also have Tommy Tibbs and Brian Jirak from St. Peters and Dean Mercuris who will be attending Peters next year. Michael Neely, Rich Ferrara, Michael Marchi (who scored 24pts/ 6-3pointers against Power), Rick Boccia, Carl Petrigno, Chris Valentine all will be looking for time on Msgr.Farrell's JV . These 11 boys who come from 9 different grammar schools have become good friends and teammates. The experience these boys are getting, playing some of the best teams on the East Coast should help the Island's high school Teams. These boys play together all summer in the Sportsfest League(currently 4-1 in a 16u div), Nike League and this year in the Marbury League in Coney Island, Brooklyn, NY With the help of Bob Marchi (assist coach) and this year Jason Allen (Senior Wagner College Basketball) my job as coach has become easy. Jason Allen takes the team about once a week and puts them through the vigours of a college workout that should help them all in high school.' Teaches Hoops, NY. 4/9/03 Anthony V.
